Applications are invited for a Post-Doctoral Research Associate on the AHRC-funded project ‘Continental European Books in Early Modern England, 1500-1640: A New Approach Using Bibliographic Data Science’ (PI: Dr Fred Schurink).

The project aims to expand our understanding of early modern England’s transnational literary connections by creating and analysing an unparalleled collection of data covering the translation, importation, sale, and ownership of foreign-language books printed abroad.

The successful candidate will work closely with the PI and the Digital Development Team of the University of Manchester Library to harmonize, reconcile, transform, add, and enhance data on foreign books in early modern England and produce two journal articles (one co-authored with the PI) based on analysis of the data.

The post will be available from 1 July 2024 for a fixed term of 12 months full-time. Candidates should have completed a PhD in Early Modern English Literature, History, or a related subject. Some skills in palaeography and Latin are required, and experience of working with large datasets is desirable, but training will be available.

What you will get in return:

  • Fantastic market leading Pension scheme
  • Excellent employee health and wellbeing services including an Employee Assistance Programme
  • Exceptional starting annual leave entitlement, plus bank holidays
  • Additional paid closure over the Christmas period
  • Local and national discounts at a range of major retailers
