The Faculty of Faculty of Environment, Science and Economy

The above full-time post is available on a fixed term basis from 1 November 2022 for 18 months in the Faculty of Environment, Science, and Economy.

The post

The Faculty of Environment, Society and Economy wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Associate to support the work of Professor Peter Cox and Dr Anna Harper as part of the interdisciplinary project NetZeroPlus. The NetZeroPlus project will deliver valuable insights on how tree-planting can remove greenhouse gases from the atmosphere while delivering other benefits.

The successful applicant will use a new version of the Joint UK Land Environment Simulator (JULES) coupled to the Robust Ecosystem Demography (RED) model. They will work with project partners (especially Forest Research) to improve the representation of forest growth for UK woodlands. They will run the model to enable a spatial-temporal understanding of GGR potentials across the UK and contribute to the ensemble simulations needed to build a decision support tool. Importantly, they will join an active research team working to draw together data, models, and statistical methods to predict future forest growth and GGR in the UK.

About you

The successful applicant will be able to present information on research progress and outcomes, communicate complex information, orally, in writing and electronically and prepare proposals and applications to external bodies.

Applicants will possess a relevant PhD (or be nearing completion) or possess an equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes. Applicants will be able to develop and run a land surface model (preferably JULES-RED) in an HPC setting, communicate results through both peer-reviewed journal articles and presentations at conferences, and work with a large interdisciplinary team to meet project objectives.
