The Department of Archaeology  at the University of York is ranked 12th in the world in the QS rankings. Role

The Department of Archaeology seeks a postdoctoral research associate to work for 24 months on the ERC funded project “COMMIOS: Communities and Connectivities: Iron Age Britons and their Continental Neighbours” led by Professor Ian Armit.

In this role, you will conduct research in the field of human osteoarchaeology under the supervision of senior colleagues and also contribute towards wider collaborative research. You will analyse and interpret research data, write up research results and disseminate findings through publications, seminar and conference presentations, public engagement and outreach activities. You will draft osteological reports for the use of museums and other organisations supplying the project with samples. You will also undertake appropriate organisational and administrative activities connected to the research project, including conference organisation, and the development of promotional or educational material including website maintenance and development and the use of social media. You will contribute to the development of collaborative networks both internally and externally, and attend and contribute to relevant meetings.   

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

You will hold a first degree in archaeology or a cognate discipline and a PhD in human osteoarchaeology or equivalent experience. You will have knowledge of human osteoarchaeology sufficient to engage in high quality research, knowledge of a range of appropriate research techniques and methodologies and research expertise in an area that will complement and enhance the department’s research strategy and goals. Knowledge of British later prehistory is desirable.

You will have highly developed oral and written communication skills to engage effectively with wide ranging audiences. You will have the experience and ability to write up research work for publication in high profile journals and engage in public dissemination and the ability to develop research objectives, projects, and proposals for your own and joint research, with the assistance of a mentor if required. You will have experience and competency to conduct individual and collaborative research projects, the ability to identify sources of funding and contribute to the process of securing funds, with collaborators if required and competency to make presentations at conferences. 

Preference will be given to candidates with experience in writing human skeletal reports to publication standard and/or experience in the field of palaeopathology.
