About the role
Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, you will support the Principal Investigator in delivery of research activity on the implementation of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning techniques to develop ground-breaking computational tools for modelling coastal flooding.
Tasks will entail modelling and analysis of state-of-the art Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning techniques to be embedded within Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software designed by our group. Of particular interest is the potential for applications to meteorological tsunami early warning in the UK and around the world.
The role is fixed term and the period of the contract will be 24 months.
About the team
This Research Project is being delivered within the Department of Mathematics, Physics and Electrical Engineering . The Department has core groups in Mathematics (Mathematics of Complex and Nonlinear Phenomena), Astrophysics (Solar and Space Physics), Statistics (Applied Statistics), Renewable Energy (Renewable Energy Technologies and Materials), Electrical Engineering (Electrical Power and Control Systems), Communications (Optical Communications Research Group) and Materials Physics (Smart Materials & Surfaces Laboratory). The department has many success stories such as:
- Ranked 25th in the UK for research power in engineering in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework, with 90% of our research outputs rated as world-leading or internationally excellent.
- Ranked in the world top-250 for Engineering and Technology in the Times Higher Education's World University subject rankings 2022.
- External funders of our research include the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), Science and Technologies Facilities Council (STFC), Medical Research Council (MRC), Leverhulme Trust, US Air Force, and Horizon2020
- Strong links with industrial partners and an excellent record of securing and delivering Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs), Research and Development collaborative bids and contract research
Within the Department, the MCNP group conducts world-leading research aiming at impacting on challenges posed by a fast-changing world. It is engaged in ground-breaking research in the hottest areas of modern Mathematics, Physics, Biology and other sciences, including multiple international collaborations with other leading experts.
About you
Applicants should hold a PhD degree awarded in an area of research within Mathematics or Engineering and have demonstrable specialist expert knowledge in modelling, analysis, and optimisation of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning techniques.
