This full-time post is available from 5 September 2022 on a fixed term basis until 30 September 2023, with the potential to extend for an additional 12 months subject to performance. This post offers the opportunity for hybrid working – some time on the University of Exeter’s Penryn Campus (Cornwall) and some time at home.

The post

The College wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Associate / Fellow to support the work of Dr. Ed Gasson. This Royal Society funded post is available from September 2022. The successful applicant will work in collaboration with Dr. Matthew Palmer at the Met Office and the post will involve a secondment to the Met Office.

This exciting opportunity will focus on high impact, low probability future sea level rise scenarios caused by changes in the Antarctic Ice Sheet. A particular focus will be on timing and rates of meltwater production on the surface of ice shelves. The work will make use of the CMIP6 UKESM ensemble and an offline ice sheet model. Tasks will include regional nested hindcast and forecast simulations as well as whole Antarctic Ice Sheet simulations to 2300.

About you

At Associate level, the successful applicant will be able to present information on research progress and outcomes, communicate complex information, orally, in writing and electronically and prepare proposals and applications to external bodies.

At Fellow level, the successful applicant will be able to develop research objectives, projects and proposals; identify sources of research funding and contribute to the process of securing funds and make presentations at conferences and other events.

Applicants will possess a PhD (or be nearing completion at Associate level) or possess an equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes. Applicants will have experience in computer programming (ideally Fortran).
