The Role and Department
The Department of Mathematical Sciences is one of the UK’s best mathematics departments with an outstanding reputation in teaching, research and employability of our students. It has an active programme of internationally recognized research in Pure and Applied Mathematics. The research culture is vibrant, with many visitors, seminars, international conferences and workshops. We aim to provide a supportive and friendly environment with a strong sense of community. The Department, which currently has 110 permanent members of staff, is set to grow significantly over the next ten years.

Applications are invited for a two-year postdoctoral position in low-dimensional topology and knot theory in the research group of Dr Claudius Zibrowius.
The position will initially be for 24 months, with the possibility of an extension for another 6–12 months (not guaranteed). The starting date will be between 1 April and 1 October 2023, by agreement.
There is ample travel funding and there are no teaching duties.
The successful candidate will be working on projects related to the DFG research grant "Local problems in low-dimensional topology from the perspective of multicurves", through which the position is funded. Expertise in bordered Heegaard Floer homology and/or Khovanov homology is desirable, but not essential. The successful candidate will also have time to develop their own research programme and to collaborate with other people. Durham has a particularly strong profile in geometry and topology.
- To conduct individual and collaborative research projects under the direction of the Principal Investigator.
- To understand and convey material of a specialist or highly technical nature through presentations and discussions within the research group, leading to the presentation of research papers in conferences and publications.
- To present work at seminars, both internally and externally, and at international conferences.
- To publish high quality outputs, including papers for submission to peer reviewed journals and open access electronic archives
- To prepare and deliver presentations on research outputs/activities to audiences which may include: research sponsors, academic and non-academic audiences.
- To assist with the development of research objectives and proposals.
- To work with the Principal Investigator and other colleagues in the research group, as appropriate, to identify areas for research, develop new research methods and extend the research portfolio.
- To deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines by discussing with the Principal Investigator and offering creative or innovative solutions.
- To liaise with research colleagues and make internal and external contacts to develop knowledge and understanding to form relationships for future research collaboration.
- To be involved in graduate student supervision, as appropriate, in particular through research group seminars and discussions.
- To engage in wider citizenship to support the department and wider discipline, such as peer reviewing for journals.
- To plan and manage own research activity, research resources in collaboration with others and contribute to the planning of research projects.
- To contribute to fostering a collegial and respectful working environment which is inclusive and welcoming and where everyone is treated fairly with dignity and respect.

The post-holder is employed to work on a research project which will be led by another colleague. Whilst this means that the post-holder will not be carrying out independent research in his/her own right, the expectation is that they will contribute to the advancement of the project, through the development of their own research ideas/adaptation and development of research protocols.
Successful applicants will, ideally, be in post between 1 April 2023 and 1 October 23.
