A 3-year full-time postdoctoral research associate position is available via an EPSRC funded project entitled “Incorporating Size Effects into Multiscale Adhesion Modelling of Bitumen-Mineral Interfaces”.

The research will be undertaken in the Highway Engineering group in the Department of Civil Engineering, School of Infrastructure and Sustainable Engineering, at Aston University, Birmingham, UK.

This is a joint research programme, partnering with the University of Nottingham and two industrial collaborators. The project aims to develop an adhesion analysis framework (AAF) for bituminous materials, providing the means to design high-performance asphalt and to assess the behaviour of new, recycled, or modified bituminous materials subjected to harsher mechanical and environmental conditions.

The successful applicant will be responsible for conducting independent research in a wide range of mechanics analysis and multiscale modelling of road construction materials. The applicant will be closely collaborating with the other project partners in experimental characterisation, data analysis, and the development of the database and the AAF.

The successful applicant should have a Master degree with research experience in engineering subjects, and a PhD degree. Knowledge in advanced mechanics or experience in microstructural analysis, molecular dynamics simulations or finite element modelling is beneficial.
