The School of History at Queen Mary University of London wishes to recruit a thirty-one-month Postdoctoral Research Assistant to work on an AHRC-DfG UK-German-funded project, “Jewish Pimps, Prostitutes and Campaigners in a Transnational German and British Context, 1875–1940”, led by Dr Daniel Lee (PI).
This project, which was launched in 2019, will draw on the expertise of a project group specializing in the study of gender, antisemitism and migration to investigate the phenomenon of Jewish involvement in the sex trade. The successful candidate will join a team of researchers led by Dr Daniel Lee and Dr Stefanie Fischer (co-I, the Center for Research on Antisemitism (ZfA) at the Technical University of Berlin, Germany) and will undertake research on any aspect of Jewish prostitution in the years 1875–1940. While in the late nineteenth century up until the Second World War, Jews were consistently demonized by anti-Semites because of their role in the trade as prostitutes, pimps and brothel owners, they have featured only marginally in recent studies of prostitution that in recent years has experienced a renewed interest. Two postdoctoral researchers (one at Queen Mary and one at the Technical University of Berlin) will explore for thirty-one months Jews and the sex trade, 1875 -1940, in British, German and transnational contexts. Largely neglected by historians of Jewish history, and the history of antisemitism this research project will look beyond institutional frameworks that governed the everyday lives of Jewish prostitutes in the age of the great Jewish migration to expose a new understanding of international mobility in the era of modern globalisation. As an ambitious outreach programme committed to social justice and social change, we will take the project’s findings to the general public through our work with British and German stakeholders that include women’s and anti-trafficking charities, foundations and NGOs.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in a relevant area which will have been awarded before the start of the role. Relevant subject areas include but are not limited to: Jewish history; comparative literature; history of religion; cultural history; philosophy; intellectual history; gender/sexuality studies; social anthropology; sociology; urban studies; comparative literature.
The post will start on 1 October 2020, or as soon as possible thereafter, and is fixed term for a period of thirty-one-months from the start date. The post is full time (35 hours per week) with a starting salary of £38,084 per annum, depending on experience. Benefits include 30 days annual leave, pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan.
Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.
