Postdoctoral Research Assistant: Medieval Vernacular Bibles

This part-time post will be fixed-term until 31st January 2027, and it is anticipated that the appointee will start on 1 March 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Following the award of a research grant from the UK-German Funding Initiative in the Humanities (UK Arts and Humanities Research Council—Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) to Dr Elizabeth Solopova for the project ‘Medieval Vernacular Bibles as Unity, Diversity and Conflict’, the Faculty of English is seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Assistant to work on the project.

The post-holder will be based at the English Faculty in Oxford, reporting to Dr Elizabeth Solopova (Principal Investigator) and collaborating with a team at the University of Augsburg (PI: Prof. Freimut Löser).

In collaboration with the team at the University of Augsburg, the Oxford team will publish two Lollard polemical treatises and undertake comparative research on the texts being edited and more widely, to examine issues around the education and social background of translators, the methods they employed, and their influence on one another’s work.

The postholder will be responsible for editing and publishing the Archbishop’s Oath in print and online, collaborating with the project team at the University of Augsburg, and carrying out their own research within the project.

The successful candidate will have or be near to completing a doctorate in Middle English language and literature or a related field, together with knowledge of Latin, excellent communication and organisational skills, and experience of working with Middle English manuscripts.
