Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Experimental Plasma Physics

Updated: about 2 years ago
Location: Oxford, ENGLAND
Deadline: 21 Feb 2022

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Experimental Plasma Physics at the Department of Physics.

The post is available a fixed-term duration of 4 years - subject to funding.

The focus of this project is to develop novel spectroscopic techniques in high energy density physics, such as resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS), and field them in experiments at large-scale x-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) facilities. Using these techniques, we aim to measure directly the electronic structure of extreme states of matter, and understand how it evolves under material compression and phase transformation. Recently published related work can be found here:

The successful candidate will work within the wider research group and lead our efforts on developing and fielding a wide range of x-ray spectroscopic and scattering diagnostics on dynamic compression experiments at XFEL facilities. The candidate will actively work on the design and preparation of these experiments, and will play an important role in the data analysis and interpretation. The candidate will endeavour to connect the experimental observations with theoretical and computational predictions performed in the wider research group and collaboration.

The post-holder will have the opportunity to teach.

Applicants should hold a PhD, or be close to completion, in physics or a related field, and have a strong background in experimental plasma physics or more general experimental x-ray spectroscopy.

Previous experience working on x-ray free electron laser facilities will be an advantage.

Candidates are expected to demonstrate the ability to work independently on cutting-edge research projects, to communicate their research, objectives, and interests effectively, and to work well within a larger international research environment.

Please direct enquiries about the role to Sam Vinko ([email protected]).

The closing date for applications is 21 February 2022 at noon.
