Department: School of Biological & Chemical Sciences
Salary: £33,615-£37,411 (Grade 4)
Location: Mile End
Closing date: 07-Jul-2019
A Postdoctoral Research Assistant position is available in the School of Biological and Chemical Sciences (SBCS) at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL). The researcher will be working under the supervision of Dr Matteo Palma (Dept. of Chemistry, Queen Mary). We have developed a novel platform centred on the use of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) for the fabrication of nanoscale solution processable biochips with multi-sensing capability (Nano Letters , 2018, 18 , 4130-35, and UK patent Application 1719555.3). We now want to fabricate definitive quantitative assays as point-of-care diagnostic devices for commercial applications toward the next stage of investment. For this we will collaborate with a medical research charity (LifeArc) with diagnostic development capabilites and technology transfer experience of bridging the gap between the research bench and patient treatments.
As a member of the prestigious Russell Group, Queen Mary is one of UK’s leading research-focused higher education institutions, where multidisciplinary research is carried out at the highest level. Access to fume-hoods and appropriate bench space as well as all the standard (bio)chemistry equipment will be available in the state-of-the-art Joseph Priestley chemistry building, where the researcher will be located. In addition, the Palma laboratory hosts a Scanning Probe Microscopy set-up (Bruker dimension icon), and has further access at QMUL to Focused Ion-Beam (FEI quanta), SEM and TEM.
The duties of the role include conducting innovative research, collecting and analysing data, preparing and presenting research reports, and contributing to writing research papers for publication in peer-reviewed journals of international standing.
The successful candidate will have a PhD (awarded) and experience in materials science research and sensing investigations (ideally with carbon nanotubes or carbon nanostructures), with an established track record of success in high-quality original research. Applicants should have a solid grounding in biosensing and different aspects of materials science research, from basic wet-chemistry skills, to experience with electrical measurements ideally for sensing, scanning probe microscopy, and carbon nanotubes. During the project, the candidate will have the opportunity to develop their supervision, writing, communication and organisational skills.
The position is full time and available for 1 year, with a start date of October 1st 2019. The starting salary will be in the range £33,615-£37,411 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days annual leave, a pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan.
Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.
