Postdoctoral or Doctoral Researcher in Cell / Vascular Biology

Updated: over 1 year ago
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 15 Aug 2022

The Cell Communication group led by Dr. Kari Vaahtomeri at the Translational Cancer Medicine Program, Faculty of Medicine, University of Helsinki and Wihuri Research Institute, Finland, invites applications for a position of

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER/DOCTORAL STUDENT

for a fixed term till 31.8.2023. The position is filled immediately upon finding a suitable candidate. Trial period of maximum six months will be applied.

Vaahtomeri lab is a dynamic young research group. We are interested in the cellular mechanisms of lymphatic capillary growth and immune cell trafficking. Lymphatic research is currently a hot topic since stimulation of lymphatic endothelium has been shown to boost adaptive immunity in inflammation-associated conditions, such as cancer, neurodegeneration and heart and coronary diseases.

Our research focuses on cell/molecule level mechanisms that allow lymphatic endothelium to sense and respond to changes in the microenvironment. In these studies, we use primary cell culture models, genetic perturbations, state-of-the-art microscopy and image analyses.

We have a position for a fixed term (till 31.8.2023) for a postdoctoral researcher or a doctoral student, who is motivated to investigate key open questions in the fields of:

  • Cell biology
  • Vascular biology
  • Leukocyte trafficking

The candidate most suitable for the position is expected to be enthusiastic about scientific research. The candidate should be able to demonstrate abstract thinking as well as the potential to develop and pursue a scientific project in the field of cell biology. He/she should have strong communication skills (English) and the ability to work in an international environment in an organized manner. Experience in cell culture, microscopy, image analyses, in vivo models and/or other related disciplines is considered beneficial.

At the postdoctoral level, a successful candidate should have a Ph.D. degree in an appropriate biological subject and a demonstrated track record of peer-reviewed publications. For a post-doctoral researcher, the brutto salary is starting from 3500 euros/month, depending on previous qualifications and experience.

At the pre-doctoral level, it is required that the candidate has study right for doctoral studies at University of Helsinki or he/she will acquire it during the trial period. Previous experience in a relevant research field is considered an advantage. Doctoral researchers have typically at the beginning of their PhD work gross salary about 2300-2400 euros/month, and it raises gradually as the PhD work progresses.

The work is supervised by principal investigator Kari Vaahtomeri (Ph.D., Doc.). Our laboratory is located in the Translational Cancer Medicine Research Program, Biomedicum Helsinki, Faculty of Medicine, University of Helsinki and Wihuri Research Institute.

Please, enclose a CV, transcript of study records, list of publications and a short motivation letter to your application. The deadline for the applications is Monday the 15th of August, 2022.
