About the position 

The postdoctoral fellowship position is a temporary position where the main goal is to qualify for work in senior academic positions.  

Hydrogen can be fully clean when it is produced by other green energies. It is used to store energy from these renewables, like solar photovoltaics (PV) and wind, whose availability is not always well matched with demand. To be sustainable, hydrogen must be safe and stably accessible, both technologically and financially. Public awareness and cost are other critical issues affected by uncertainties.

This Postdoctoral Fellowship is part of the SUSHy project on “sustainability development and cost-reduction of hybrid renewable energies powered hydrogen stations by risk-based multidisciplinary approaches”, involving internationally renowned institutions across Europe and Japan. The project is expected to develop risk-based approaches to reduce overconservative expensive design, while ensuring safety, sustainability, and efficiency of hydrogen fuelling stations.

You will focus your research on:

  • main recommendations and lessons learnt from previous operational experience,
  • monitoring of safety performance,
  • protection and emergency response systems, and
  • risk perception and acceptance

You will also be required to guide other students on this research and collaborate with the administration of the project.

Your immediate leader is Head of Department.

Duties of the position

  • independent research and publication of results in recognised scientific journals
  • supervision of relevant PhD and master students
  • project administration activities for SUSHy

Required selection criteria

  • you must have completed a Norwegian doctoral degree or corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian PhD in Engineering 
  • you must have a professionally relevant background in chemical engineering, civil engineering, industrial engineering, safety engineering or similar disciplines
  • substantial research experience documented with peer-reviewed scientific papers
  • excellent with verbal and written communication in English

The appointment is to be made in accordance with Regulations on terms of employment for positions such as postdoctoral fellow, Ph.D Candidate, research assistant and specialist candidate.

Preferred selection criteria

  • a strong interest in learning and performing the tasks of a more senior academic position, i.e., supervising and developing publications with Ph.D. students, administrating project activities, etc.
  • ability to identify patterns or connections between interdisciplinary domains that are not obviously related, and to identify key or underlying issues in complex modelling cases
  • ability to transfer an idea to others in an understandable and effective way
  • adherence to moral and ethical principles of scientific integrity

Personal characteristics

  • ability and confidence to self-manage and manage other students
  • manifest drive and determination
  • openness to feedback and input from others as well as the ability to collaborate, negotiate and influence others

Emphasis will be placed on personal and interpersonal qualities.

Salary and conditions

As a Postdoctoral Fellow (code 1352) you are normally paid from gross NOK  553 500 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund

The period of employment is 2 years.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants , and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU.  

After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

The position is subject to external funding.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.
