Northumbria University seeks to appoint a Postdoctoral Fellow for the ESRC funded project 'Digital Sovereignty by Design- Exploring the Impact of European Union's Digital Sovereignty Approach on the UK's Technology Landscape'. We invite applications of candidates from a variety of Social Sciences' disciplines to become part of an exciting, multidisciplinary research project incorporating scholars from International Relations, Law and Computing Science. The team’s research addresses how interaction and competition between different British and European Union actors influence the establishment of regulatory regimes over new technological innovations, or categories of technology, related to digital security and data privacy. More specifically, the project aims to: 1) engage with current law and policy approaches to cybersecurity in the United Kingdom and in the European Union, 2) identify how the EU’s current shift towards a digital sovereignty approach may negatively impact upon UK private-sector technology providers, in particular microprocessors, and 3) consider ways in which these negative impacts may be mitigated.
The ideal candidate for this role is a capable and independent researcher who has expert knowledge of European Union cybersecurity policy, as well as of the UK-EU relationship in a post-Brexit context. The post requires the capacity to work alongside the project researchers on the development of co-authored publications, the organisation of policy engagement events, and the development of new research bids. The ability to engage with other disciplines as part of an interdisciplinary research team is essential for this interdisciplinary project. We invite applications from researchers with expertise in a range of different subject areas such as International Relations, Law, Sociology, and Science and Technology Studies, who hold a PhD in one of these disciplines.
The Postdoctoral Fellow will be hosted by the Social Sciences Department at Northumbria University and will work with Dr Helena Farrand Carrapico, who specialises on European Security governance, with particular interest in EU cybersecurity and the UK-EU relationship post-Brexit. This post is funded until the 31st of August 2023 on a full time basis and is available to start immediately (either face to face or online). Informal inquiries for this post can be sent to [email protected].
