The postdoctoral fellowship position is a temporary position where the main goal is to qualify for work in senior academic positions.

The Building Technology group is responsible for research and teaching within the design of sustainable and functional buildings, with a special focus on material use and the building envelope. Building technology includes the engineering fields of building physics/energy use, fire engineering, and acoustics. In addition, the disciplines of climate adaptation, building materials, circular economy, and environmental system analysis are central to the research group. The group has laboratory cooperation with SINTEF Community as well as with the Acoustics group at the Department of Electronic Systems, NTNU.

This Postdoctoral Fellow in Building Acoustics position covers a special responsibility for teaching and research activities within Building acoustics, including the theoretical basis, and insight in practical building technology, regarding sound insulation of buildings and room acoustics.

This Postdoctoral Fellow position is a part of NTNUs initiative to establish a Center for Green Shift in the Built Environment (https://www.ntnu.edu/iv/green-shift-in-the-built-environment ) hosted by the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. The Center’s vision is to create value in the society through digitalisation. This center will utilize and develop expertise, methods, tools and strategies for a sustainable built environment. The research and innovation activities of the center will be directed at a green shift and a digital future.

Your immediate leader is Associate Professor.

Duties of the position

  • This position covers a special responsibility for teaching for the courses TBA4167 - Bygningsakustikk and TBM4222 - Bygningsfysikk, grunnkurs; and supervision of students at Master and Bachelor level according to the needs of the research group
  • Initiate and implement research within Building acoustics both within the research group of Building Technology and in interdisciplinary communities, at the NTNU level with the Department of Electronic Systems, nationally and internationally
  • Participate in the development of the Department's and research group’s professional competence and professional activities
  • The position will involve research collaboration with the acoustics research group at the Department of Electronic systems, at the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, and with the research group of Road, Rail and Transport within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. One of the intentions of the Postdoctoral Fellow is to achieve good utilization of all available resources at NTNU, and thus also to provide students from other study programs at NTNU with a teaching offer aimed explicitly at building acoustics. The collaboration also includes the possible use of laboratory facilities at the Department of Electronic systems

Required selection criteria

  • You must have completed a Norwegian doctoral degree or corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian PhD within the field of Building Acoustics.
  • If you can document that the PhD thesis has been submitted, your application can be assessed even if you have not yet defended your dissertation. Documentation of the obtained doctoral degree must be presented before you can take up the position
  • Strong foundation and scientific experience must be primarily in the field of Building Acoustics or related fields
  • Have insight into typical building structures and building materials, for new and existing buildings, including environmental aspects. Knowledge of acoustic properties of wooden buildings, especially lightweight wood constructions used in the Nordic countries, is a requirement
  • Experience and knowledge of simulation tools, and experience from laboratory and/or field measurements
  • Good written and oral English language skills

The appointment is to be made in accordance with Regulations on terms of employment for positions such as postdoctoral fellow, Ph.D Candidate, research assistant and specialist candidate.

Preferred selection criteria

  • Strong scientific knowledge and research experience in air- and structure-borne sound transmission is an advantage
  • Expertise and/or experience in digitalization processes within the topic, such as building information modelling (BIM)
  • International network in academia and/or in the construction industry
  • Good written and oral knowledge in at least one Scandinavian language

Salary and conditions

As a Postdoctoral Fellow (code 1352) you are normally paid from gross NOK 563 500 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund

The period of employment is 2 years.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants , and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU.  

After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.

Joint works will be considered. If it is difficult to identify your contribution to joint works, you must attach a brief description of your participation.
