About the position 

A Postdoctoral Fellow position is available within the Refrigeration research group on the topic of "Future Refrigeration in India ". The appointment has a duration of 4 years.

The Refrigeration research group has a well-established expertise and network as regards of vapour compression systems applying natural working fluids for various applications within different industrial sectors. In close cooperation with SINTEF the group is involved in several national and international research projects.

The background for the research work is the ongoing R&D work with several universities and institutions in India in the field of refrigeration based on applying natural working fluids. Within this cooperation the refrigeration team at NTNU/SINTEF are supporting the Indian refrigeration and Air Conditioning sector in the transition towards more environmentally friendly technologies to achieve the goals of the ratified Kigali Amendment of the Montreal Protocol.

During the post doc period some of the industry partners in India could adapt the latest refrigeration technology and leapfrog towards the technology developed and introduce by the leading countries and companies, as India’s demand for air-conditioning and refrigeration applications continues to grow. This would also strengthen the industry on the global market, enabling Indian companies to supply solutions into other regions beside the national markets.

The aim of this project and the work for the post doc within Future Refrigeration in India, is to coordinate actions, deliver training courses and support the building of demonstration sites to transfer knowledge to the decision makers within the different sectors. Active support will be given to develop R&D programs, to implement demonstration sites in real environments mainly manufactured in India, and to utilize these new sites and existing training facilities to educate (new) experts in the field of natural working fluid refrigeration technology; as well as identify key regulatory hurdles for these natural low-global warming potential refrigerants to be made applicable, accessible and affordable in the Indian market.

Duties of the position

The duties and the research work during the post doc period is to coordinate the different tasks described above and to prepare scientific publications from the results obtained with the demonstration sites in close cooperation with the project team in Norway and India. 

  • Two journal papers per year are expected from the post dos as the main author
  • Some workshop-, conference- and popular science publications  

Required selection criteria

  • A postdoctoral research fellowships is a qualification position in which the main objective is qualification for work in academic positions. You must have completed a Norwegian doctoral degree related to refrigeration systems or corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree is required.
  • Expertise and experience from the following areas:
    • refrigeration system developments
    • laboratory work related to refrigeration systems/ heat pumping systems, and
    • educational trainings (preparing compendia and lectures in relevant topics)
  • Excellent English skills, spoken and written are required. Applicants from non-English speaking countries outside Europe must document English skills by an approved test. Approved tests are TOEFL, IELTS, and Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE).

The appointment is to be made in accordance with Regulations on terms of employment for positions such as postdoctoral fellow, Ph.D Candidate, research assistant and specialist candidate  (in Norwegian).

Preferred selection criteria

  • expertise in developing refrigeration and heat pumping systems
  • expertise and experience in laboratory work or field work
  • experience with educational training
  • published number of journal articles in the field of refrigeration

Salary and conditions

As a Postdoctoral Fellow (code 1352) you are normally paid from gross NOK 584 700 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund

The period of employment is 4 years, and includes plans for a research stay abroad. 

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants  (in Norwegian), and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU.  

After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

The position is subject to external funding.
