About the position 

A Postdoc position is available at the Center of Quantum Spintronics, which is part of the Department of Physics, NTNU in Trondheim, Norway. The candidates will join and become part of an international research environment in quantum condensed matter theory and experiments.

The postdoc position has a duration of two years.

About QuSpin

QuSpin carries out research in theoretical as well as experimental fields. QuSpin`s principal goal is to describe, characterize, and develop recently identified quantum approaches to control electric signals, conceptually different from those existing today.

QuSpin, a Center of Excellence, is funded by the Research Council of Norway. QuSpin is managed by a Center Director, a center coordinator and has three principal investigators.

QuSpin currently has 8 permanent and associate professors, 2 researchers, 23 PhD students and 3 postdoctoral researchers from 9 different nations working on various aspects of low-dissipation spintronics.

Duties of the position

QuSpin carries out research in theoretical as well as experimental fields. Parts of the experimental activities are based on spin- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (spin-ARPES). For these activities modern instrumentation (momentum microscope with 2D imaging spin filter) is available at NTNU. Additional experiments are carried out at synchrotron radiation facilities. The candidate will use spin-ARPES to study the interplay of spin-orbit interaction and magnetism in different material settings, including magnetic topological insulators, complex ferromagnets and Weyl systems.  

Required selection criteria

  • You must have completed a Norwegian doctoral degree in experimental condensed matter physics or corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree.  
  • The applicants must have documented experience in angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy.
  • The position requires spoken and written fluency in the English language. Such evidence might be represented by the results from standard tests such as TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE). The candidate's language skills might also be assessed in a personal interview. 

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant   

Preferred selection criteria

  • Prior research experience in topological and/or magnetic materials
  • Experience in photoelectron momentum microscopy, ideally with spin resolution
  • Experience in synchrotron-based experiments

Salary and conditions

As a Postdoctoral Fellow (code 1352) you are normally paid from gross NOK 553 500 per annum before tax. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund. 

The employment period is 2 years.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work. 

The position is subject to external funding . 

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.
