About the opportunity:

The world-leading Parkinson's and Related Diseases Research Group based at the Brain and Mind Centre in the University of Sydney has an exciting opportunity for a post-doctoral researcher to work closely with the team across a range of NHMRC funded projects, developing novel biomarkers aimed at understanding the pathophysiology underlying disabling symptoms of Parkinson's disease and Lewy body dementia. The team has led the international field in our understanding of a diverse range of symptoms including hallucinations, freezing of gait, cognitive fluctuations, and sleep disturbance; predicting the development of the disease from prodromal populations such as idiopathic REM sleep behaviour disorder; tracking the progression of the disease; and generating translational insights from the pathophysiology of these disorders to guide therapeutic targets and clinical trials.

This role will provide you with the opportunity to receive research mentorship and clinical mentorship from internationally recognised leaders in the field. You will gain access to a large existing dataset comprising clinical, neuroimaging, neuropsychological and physiological variables, as well as to larger datasets derived from extensive international collaborative networks.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • work closely with the principal investigators of the study
  • develop new research ideas with the team
  • supervise junior researchers within the laboratory (e.g., PhD students, Honours students)
  • write-up findings and analyses for submission to high-impact peer-reviewed journals
  • present findings at local national and international conferences
  • liaise with various internal and external stakeholders including study participants
  • learn or use existing skills to analyse neuroimaging and neurophysiological data
  • acquire, manage, and analyse data (including statistical analysis)
  • build and maintain a reputation for academic excellence, while expanding knowledge and practice.

About you:

  • have a PhD in neuroscience, neuroimaging, physics, biomedical engineering, or related fields
  • have demonstrated experience in clinical or basic neuroscience research
  • experience in neuroimaging will be highly desirable.
  • be able to manage large and complex research projects
  • demonstrate excellent communication skills
  • have demonstrated experience in all aspects of the research process including study design and implementation, analysis, reporting and publication of study findings
  • have excellent time management skills, and ability to prioritise multiple competing deadlines
  • have outstanding interpersonal skills and experience in establishing and maintaining strong relationships internally and externally
  • Demonstrate the ability to supervise junior researchers.
