The Opportunity

This post represents an exciting opportunity to join an internationally leading collaborative research team led by scientists based within Keele University’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. The EPSRC funded project aims to develop new magnetic force biotechnologies to facilitate neural regeneration and will bring together a cross-disciplinary, international team with expertise in physics and materials science, neuroscience, electrophysiology, synthetic biology, and neurosurgery. The project builds on a previously successful collaboration to use physical sciences and bioengineering approaches to manipulate neurons using remote magnetic forces. We aim to investigate whether magnetic force methods could be used to remotely guide axon re-growth to reconnect neural circuits and restore function using a variety of cellular and tissue models.

The successful candidate will take a lead role in supporting project work packages aimed at the manipulation of neurobiological processes. This includes topics such as magnetic labelling of axons, the development of cellular and tissue models, the assessment of magnetic forces on axon growth in these models, and microscopy and electrophysiology studies to assess the structural and functional restoration of neuronal connections.

You will have (or expect to soon obtain) a PhD or equivalent qualification in a relevant biomedical or life sciences discipline.

Please note that the starting salary will typically be at the bottom of the pay scale shown.
