A Research Associate position, is available from 28th Feb 2024. We are seeking to employ a motivated person with a background in analytical chemistry and metabolomics to support a range of exposome and toxicological analyses being conducted in within the Horizon 2020 ATHLETE consortium.  The successful candidate will take up the role as an analyst in the laboratory of Dr Hector Keun and be responsible for NMR/LC-MS metabolomics/lipidomics protocol development and applications, development of data analysis and metabolite annotation pipelines, processing and annotation of metabolomics data, advise on design of biological experimental protocols, and data management. 

A degree in a relevant area of science is essential, as is the ability to conduct analysis of untargeted high-resolution mass spectrometry data of human biospecimens, and experience of accurate and high-quality bioanalytical procedures according to analytical protocols, and keep good laboratory records.


The post holder will also be expected to contribute to the supervision of relevant research projects students within the Department


Duties and responsibilities

  • Design and application of LC mass-spectrometry based metabolomics/lipidomics protocols using the Sciex ZenoTOF-MS platform

  • Design and application of NMR based metabolomics protocols

  • Data analysis of metabolite data sets and pipeline development with specific application to exposome research


Essential requirements

  • PhD in an area related to metabolomics, biomarkers and metabolic biochemistry

  • Practical experience within a research environment and / or publication in relevant and refereed journals

  • Knowledge & experience of LC-MS based metabolomics using Sciex Zeno TOF MS

  • Knowledge & experience of LC-MS based lipidomics

  • Knowledge & experience of computational and statistical procedures for analysing targeted and untargeted metabolomics data

  • Knowledge of metabolic biochemistry

  • Knowledge & experience with mammalian cell culture and basic molecular techniques such & PCR

  • Experience with preparation of human biosamples (e.g. serum/plasma)

  • Knowledge & experience of NMR-based metabolomics

  • Publications in LC-MS metabolomics, lipidomics and NMR based metabolomics of human biospecimens

  • Knowledge of exposome research


Further information

This a full - time position (35h/pw) and a fixed-term contract (6 months).

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £40,694 to £43,888 per annum.

Hybrid working may be considered for this role. Staff working in roles that are suitable for hybrid working will normally be expected to work 60% of their time onsite. The opportunity for hybrid working will be discussed at interview.
