Post Doctoral Fellow

KU is seeking a highly motivated Post-doctoral Fellow to work on producing milk fats through precision fermentation. The ideal candidate would have worked in setting up and running lab and pilot scale bioreactors for precision fermentation of microbial consortia using food/agri-waste as a source.

As part of the project, the researcher will have access to state-of-the-art research equipment and facilities at the Center for Biotechnology (CBT)  and Food Engineering/Processing Lab  and will get an opportunity to work alongside researchers and graduate students from various backgrounds as part of a wider team.

Qualifications  

Position Requirements

  • Conduct the specified program of research as defined by the approved project proposal.
  • Work in a collegial and cooperative manner with the principal investigator and other co-workers in the project, the research team and external collaborators.
  • Engage in the reporting and dissemination of the results in high impact journals and conference proceedings as directed by and with the support of the principal investigator.
  • Support the Principal Investigator, and research group in the design and development of the research program for the assigned project and related areas.
  • Support ordering, setting and establishment of new research equipment along with safety protocols as the needs arise in the project
  • Support undergraduate and visiting researchers to carry out the required research work for collaborative publications with leading institutes across the world
  • Carry out administrative and management work such as procurement and ordering of necessary items and consumables associated with the program of research and the project.
  • Engage in appropriate training and professional development opportunities as required by the Faculty supervisor, the Department or the University.
  • Adhere to the University's information security and confidentiality policies and procedures, and report breaches or other security risks accordingly
  • Perform any other tasks assigned by the Line Manager
  • Adhere to the existing safety protocols in the lab and develop required safety protocols if not existing for the new labs and new areas of research being developed
  • Play a leading role in establishing safe work culture in the laboratory environment

Candidate Profile

Essential Criteria

  • PhD from a reputable university in Chemical Engineering, Bioprocessing/Biotechnology or related discipline (fermentation and bioprocessing).
  • Experience in microbial or fungi culture techniques (shake flask, plate and bioreactor scale) and relevant biotechnological methods for identification of strains using DNA or RNA sequencing
  • Experience in mixed culture fermentation for producing biomass and value-added products
  • Extraction and separation of value-added compounds from fermentation broth and biomass
  • Experience writing high impact scientific research or review papers
  • A willingness to contribute to a collaborative and supportive team culture
  • Excellent English language communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • The proven ability to work on multiple tasks with competing demands and deadlines.
  • Ability to train and mentor students and support fellow researchers
  • Highly developed reasoning and problem-solving skills

Desired Criteria

  • PhD gained from a top 200 QS or THE ranked University with expertise in Bioprocessing and precision fermentation
  • At least 3 years of relevant experience as a researcher in academia or in industry working in the area of bioprocessing and precision fermentation of microbial consortia/single strains using food/agri-waste as a source
  • High impact first-author publications (preferably in top 10% journals) in the relevant field
