The Division of Engineering at New York University Abu Dhabi seeks to recruit two motivated Post-Doctoral Associates to work under the supervision of Prof. Qurrat-Ul-Ain Nadeem on the applications of programmable metasurfaces in emerging wireless communication paradigms. The candidates will investigate the role of programmable metasurfaces as reconfigurable holographic surfaces (RHSs) to enable ultra-massive/holographic MIMO communication systems, and as reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) to enable controlled reflections of electromagnetic waves in the propagation environment to meet different objectives. The candidates are expected to engage in one or more of the following research directions.

  • Carry out cutting-edge research on the physical layer design of programmable metasurface enabled communication, sensing and localization solutions for 6G networks.
  • Develop channel models as well as electromagnetic wave domain signal processing solutions for programmable metasurface enabled communication systems.
  • Investigate machine learning enabled design and optimization of RIS/RHS assisted communication systems.
  • Explore the integration of programmable metasurfaces in emerging 6G paradigms, such as integrated space-air-ground networks, THz communication, radio sensing and mapping, user positioning and tracking, energy harvesting etc.
  • Take part in experimental work to build datasets of channel measurements for RIS enabled communication environments.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Applicants must hold a PhD degree in Electrical/Electronics Engineering, Telecommunications, or any other related field.
  • Proven track record of publications in relevant IEEE journals and conferences.
  • Strong background in communication theory, signal processing, wireless communication, and optimization theory.
  • Strong verbal and written skills in English.
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills, and capacity to pursue independent research.

In addition to the above qualifications, it is desirable that the applicants have prior research experience in one or more of the following research areas/topics:

  • Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces, massive MIMO, holographic MIMO
  • Machine learning applications in wireless communication
  • Integrated space-air-ground networks
  • mmWave, THz communication
  • Electromagnetics and antenna theory
  • Designing, testing, and/or prototyping RF and wireless communication equipment

One position will begin on January 01, 2024, and the other will begin on September 01, 2024, and are renewable depending on performance. These positions will be based at the New York University in Abu Dhabi, and the candidates must be ready to relocate to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
