Measured in number of students and teachers, the Faculty of Science at the University of Helsinki (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/faculty-science ) is the largest science faculty in Finland. There are some 6,000 students taking a basic degree. Out of them, some 1,000 are postgraduates. There are some 500 international students, and over 200 researchers and teachers from abroad.
Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (INAR) is a multi- and interdisciplinary research unit based in physics, chemistry, meteorology, forest sciences, environmental sciences and social sciences in the University of Helsinki. INAR aims to strengthen the internationally leading, integrated multidisciplinary research and education environment for atmospheric and Earth system science and to feed in scientific results for the national and international environment and climate policy. It performs multiscale research from molecular to global scale and focuses on climate change, air quality, biogeochemical cycles and ecosystem processes. INAR has INAR Finland Network partners in Finnish Meteorological Institute, University of Eastern Finland and Tampere University of Technology.
Faculty of Science invites applications for
POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCHER IN MICROMETEOROLOGY AND LAND-ATMOSPHERE INTERACTIONS
starting in Spring 2022 for a fixed-term contract of three years.
The post-doctoral researcher will work in the Micrometeorology group in INAR (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/researchgroups/micrometeorology ) and will participate to multiple ongoing projects. The work will be broadly focused on land-atmosphere interactions relevant to the global carbon and water cycles. More specifically she/he will contribute to advance our understanding of one or more of the following research topics:
- The effect of surface heterogeneity on the structure of the near-surface airflow and on transport/mixing due to turbulence and submeso-scale motions and their contributions to fluxes of energy and gases;
- Feedbacks between surface fluxes and Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL) processes;
- The impacts of disturbances (e.g. drought, heatwave, clouds flecks, forest harvesting) on surface fluxes and partitioning and PBL dynamics;
- Limitations of eddy covariance flux measurements (nighttime problem, lack of surface energy balance closure).
These will be addressed by using a combination of different methodologies including eddy covariance fluxes, lidar and DTS measurements, machine learning tools and/or PBL models.
Specific duties of the position include:
- Critical appraisal of theory behind micrometeorological techniques
- The application of quantitative analytical methods to large datasets
- Presentation of results at scientific meetings
- Publishing of results in scientific journals
- Mentoring graduate and undergraduate students (teaching can take up to 5% of annual working time of 1612 hours)
Required qualifications:
- PhD in a field that is relevant to the research topics, e.g. atmospheric science,
- geophysics, environmental science, geography or similar.
- Knowledge of micrometeorological flux measurement techniques, machine learning tools applied to atmospheric and environmental data, and/or PBL models.
Preferred qualifications:
- Proficient coding skills in at least one of: R, Matlab, Python, Fortran
- Good skills in written and spoken English.
- Evidence of ability to publish results in relevant journals
- Good numerical and communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a larger team

University assists employees from abroad with their transition to work and life in Finland (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/university/working-at-the-university ).
How to apply?
Please submit your application (as a single pdf-file) including
- Cover and motivation letter,
- Curriculum vitae,
- List of publications,
- Research statement (max. 2000 words) with a brief description of previous experience and research interests, as demonstrated e.g. in a doctoral thesis.
You should use the electronic recruitment system of the University of Helsinki via the link “Apply for the position”. Applicants who are employees of the University of Helsinki are requested to leave their application via SAP Fiori. The deadline for applications is 1st of March 2022.
