Lecturer (Teaching and Scholarship) 

The innovative Postgraduate Taught (PGT) programmes at WOPEC in the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences, Cardiff University incorporate both distance learning and contact teaching. We are seeking to appoint a part time module leader to join our motivated postgraduate teaching team.  

Module Leaders work to develop, deliver and evaluate modules/ programmes within the postgraduate qualification provision in the School. As well as teaching and assessing students, they are responsible for the day to day running of a module, the maintenance of external accreditations as appropriate and the teaching and assessment including co-ordinating other members of staff that contribute.

Teaching and assessment for this module is delivered online although occasional attendance is required in Cardiff. There is a requirement to deliver some live teaching episodes outside of standard office hours. In person attendance at Exam Board/ Board of Studies in February and/or in July is also required each year.  

This is a part time position 0.11 FTE (4 hours per week) and is fixed term for a period of 3 years. 

Salary:  £49,794 - £54,395 per annum (Grade 7), plus market supplement, pro rata for hours worked.

Job Description

Main function 

To undertake a full teaching load, including the development, delivery and evaluation of postgraduate teaching and assessment up to Masters level. To supervise students, provide feedback and be responsible for the pastoral care of students. To carry out administrative duties within the work area as required. To be responsible for delivery and content of an optometry postgraduate taught module.  

Teaching  

•    To act as a module leader for a postgraduate teaching including co-ordinating with other contributors to ensure delivery of a high standard of teaching to     meet student needs and expectations.
•    To contribute to the delivery of other modules within the same subject sub-specialty as required.
•    To design appropriate teaching materials at a postgraduate level.
•    To deliver postgraduate teaching including recording lectures and delivering tutorials (online and in-person).
•    To identify the need for developing/ revising the content or structure of modules and curriculum and make proposals on how this should be achieved.
•    To maintain external accreditations as appropriate.
•    To teach in a variety of settings from small group sessions to large lectures.
•    To set, mark and assess work and examinations and provide feedback to students, including replying to E-Mail and other communication with students within     an appropriate time period.
•    To be responsible for administrative duties in areas such as examinations, assessment of progress and student attendance.
•    To manage projects relating to own area of work and the organisation of external activities such as practical days outside of the School of Optometry.
•    Supervise the work of students including the supervision of Undergraduate and Master’s students, the co-supervision of PGR’s and acting as a PGR progress     review panel member as required

Scholarship 

•    Contribute to scholarship in the area of work through participation in conferences, seminars and other academic and professional forums to disseminate the     results of individual scholarship
•    Engage in scholarly activity through journal articles and/or outputs which advance knowledge within the area of work
•    To mentor colleagues with less experience and advise on personal development.
•    Contribute to scholarship through interdisciplinary working with individuals and teams within, and external to, the wider university community
•    Carry out other forms of scholarship including work associated with examinations (setting and marking paper and providing constructive feedback to     students), administration, participation in committee work 

Other 

•    Engage effectively with industrial, commercial and public sector organisations, professional institutions, other academic institutions etc., regionally     and nationally to raise awareness of the School’s profile, to cultivate strategically valuable alliances, and to pursue opportunities for collaboration     across a range of activities. These activities are expected to contribute to the School and the enhancement of its regional and national profile
•    Participate in School administration and activities to promote the School and its work to the wider University and the outside world
•    Any other duties not included above, but consistent with the role

Essential Criteria 

Qualifications and Education 

1.    GOC registered optometrist or an ophthalmologist or allied healthcare practitioner
2.    Specialist knowledge of contact lenses in optometric practice
3.    Postgraduate Certificate in University Teaching and Learning or equivalent qualification or substantial post registration experience as a practising ophthalmic clinician  

Knowledge, Skills and Experience 

4.    Significant teaching experience at a high level of quality at undergraduate/postgraduate level.
5.    Ability to design, deliver and continuously develop modules across the Schools teaching programmes.  

Pastoral, Communication and Team Working 

6.    Excellent communication skills with the ability to present complex and conceptual ideas clearly and confidently to others using high level skills and a     range of media
7.    The ability to provide appropriate pastoral support to students, appreciate the needs of individual students and their circumstances and to act as a     personal tutor.
8.    Ability to act as module leader and co-ordinate with others to ensure student needs and expectations are met. 

Other 

9.    Proven ability to demonstrate creativity, innovation and teamworking within work 

Desirable criteria 

1.    Postgraduate degree at PhD level in a related subject area
2.    Qualification in clinical teaching
3.    Ability to work a few evenings and weekends a year
4.    Growing national reputation within academic field
5.    Higher qualification in contact lens practice e.g. Professional Higher Certificate in Contact Lens Practice, Professional Diploma in Contact Lens Practice     or comparable alternative.
6.    GOC specialist register for independent prescribing.
7.    Evidence of ability to participate in and develop both internal and external networks and utilise them to enhance the teaching and research activities of     the School
8.    A willingness to take responsibility for academically related administration.
