About the role

The Psychology Department at the University of Exeter seeks to appoint outstanding scholars in clinical and/or applied psychology to join our team of exceptional scientists and educators to conduct world-leading research aimed at tackling the big challenges facing the mental health and wellbeing in society and educate the next generation of psychologists. The successful candidate will join our active, large, diverse clinical psychology research group (http://psychology.exeter.ac.uk/research/groups/clinical/).

We welcome applications from any area of clinical and applied psychology, but we are particularly interested in recruiting individuals who conduct research relevant to the wider university strategy (see https://www.exeter.ac.uk/about/strategy2030/ ) and who can contribute to our range of clinical and applied psychology training programmes and professional doctorates (seehttp://psychology.exeter.ac.uk/research/groups/clinical). We would also welcome applications from people who bring new methods expertise to our existing research themes and groups (see http://psychology.exeter.ac.uk/research/ and https://psychology.exeter.ac.uk/research/groups/clinical/). We would particularly welcome applications from candidates who are clinically qualified (e.g., clinical/counselling psychologists/therapists).  Our existing clinically-qualified staff benefit from strong links with local National Health Service (NHS) Trusts and our in-house NHS-funded research clinic (AccEPT Service: https://www.exeter.ac.uk/departments/mooddisorders/acceptclinic/ ), as well as a large and thriving professional psychology training community (CEDAR: https://cedar.exeter.ac.uk/).

Successful candidates will also help us to deliver an inclusive and innovative education to our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

About you

For a Lecturer post you will have:


  • A strong and demonstrable interest in Psychology
  • A PhD or equivalent
    • An independent, active research programme in a relevant field of research that has the potential to become internationally leading
    • Evidence of attracting research funding, or demonstrate a clear potential to attract such funding
    • A strong potential for research leadership
    • Enthusiasm and/or experience for delivering high quality undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes

For a Senior Lecturer post, in addition to the above, you will have:


  • An internationally recognised research programme
    • A strong track record in refereed publications and success in significant grant capture
    • Clear evidence of research leadership
    • Relationships with external organisations and funders/ and knowledge and experience of key sectors or business challenges

For an Associate Professor post you will:


  • Be a leading authority in academic specialism with a strong international reputation, as evidenced by international quality research publications, a strong track record of sustained research funding as principal investigator and PhD supervision, as well as other esteem indicators
    • Have experience of making a significant contribution to the development and clarification of research strategy for your subject area
    • Contribute to our educational programmes and to the overall student experience.
    • Be a leading international figure with the ability to attract world-class individuals to your research group
