Performing planned and reactive, mechanical and electrical, maintenance activities across University buildings and facilities.

Job summary

The Multi-Skilled (mechanical and electrical) Technician will carry out highly skilled operations in their area of expertise across University campus sites, directly reporting to a Team Leader.  It is expected that a multi-skilled Technician will hold full relevant qualifications in one of either Electrical or Mechanical discipline, supplemented by additional qualifications, cross-training or demonstrable experience in the other discipline. Occasionally, the post holder may be required to undertake other tasks outside of their area of expertise, following suitable training.  In order to flexibly utilise resource you will be flexible in your ability to work in different areas of the department, or wider University, and to work various shift patterns in order to meet the needs of the University. 

Where appropriate, the post holder will supervise members of staff for specific tasks e.g. apprentices, trainees, delegating tasks and providing on-the-job training in the use of equipment, materials and machinery. They may also be required to deputise for senior roles, as and when required and oversee others when on call.

Main Duties

•    Undertake multi-skilled (mechanical and electrical) maintenance operations across a designated area of responsibility.
•    Progress maintenance operations in line with the goals and objectives of the maintenance function in order to achieve departmental key performance indicator targets.
•    Undertake and take ownership of assigned maintenance tasks seeing them through from start to fruition.
•    Take ownership of allocated work and see the task through to satisfactory completion applying best technical and Health, Safety and Environmental practice at all times.
•    Interpret and work from verbal instructions, drawings, specifications and technical manuals including online systems and portals.
•    Select and use appropriate tools and equipment for the task being undertaken, ensuring maintenance of associated equipment including stock levels.
•    As appropriate to your specialism, diagnose and (where possible) repair faults appertaining to the maintenance of the University estate, escalating more complex faults to line management. 
•    Coach others to acquire skills and experience, including demonstrating standard work tasks and giving guidance for improvement.
•    Work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team, understanding the inter-relationship between trades and supporting the work of other trades as and when required, including knowledge-sharing.
•    An active member of the 24-hour on-call system to cover emergency breakdowns outside of normal working hours if and when required to do so.
•    Ensure work records are meaningful, accurate and kept updated at all times to ensure effective monitoring of progress.
•    Ensure that Health and Safety regulations, Codes of Practice and safe working procedures are understood and are adhered to at all times. Ensure that all supervised staff are aware of and adhere to these procedures.
•    Maintain a commitment to personal development, including learning new techniques and trade practices in line with evolving technology and legislative H&S requirements. This may involve attendance in training courses.

•    To carry out such other duties as required by the Director of Estates or as instructed on behalf of the same.

Person Specification

•    City and Guilds Certificate Level 3, or approved equivalent, in relevant Electrical and Mechanical maintenance subjects.
•    Qualification to current Edition Electrical Regulations is desirable. 
•    Skilled in the hands-on repair of all plant and equipment, having the ability to fault find, read drawings, diagnose and repair using their technical knowledge on equipment
•    Customer-focussed and personable with a strong attention to detail, ensuring work is completed to the highest standard
•    Self-motivated with an ability to work under pressure, often autonomously, on own initiative
•    Good IT Skills with knowledge and application of MS Office packages
•    Good organisational and time management skills, with an ability to prioritise workload effectively
•    Good interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to give clear instructions and guide staff
•    Ability to identify and report issues efficiently and clearly
•    Full driving licence is required to ensure that a timely response can be made on call and when on site.
