Overall purpose :
Research in the Metabolism and Gene Regulation group led by Dr Santiago Vernia focuses on the molecular mechanisms leading to fatty liver disease and cardiovascular complications associated with obesity. Current research interests in the lab include the development of RNA-based therapeutic approaches to treat these pathologies.
The successful candidate should have excellent communication, organizational and research skills, a strong work ethic and attention to detail, meticulous record keeping, and a positive attitude to learning and trouble-shooting new methods. Main duties / key responsibilities:
- Performing physiological and biochemical assays
- To assist in running the laboratory (e.g. ordering reagents, maintaining equipment, preparing media, performing general lab duties as required).
- To assist in in vivo studies
- To take responsibility for Health & Safety training/induction of new group members
- To update lab databases and resources (e.g. lists of reagents, equipment, protocols, cells, risk assessments).
- To contribute to the scientific programme of the group by learning any necessary techniques and performing independent experiments (supervised by the PI).
- To accurately record and analyse the results of experiments
- To collaborate with other group members
Education / Qualifications / Training required:
Essential:
- BSc or equivalent qualification in molecular or cellular biology
Previous work experience required:
Essential:
- Previous lab experience with molecular biology
- Experience with one or more of: molecular biology, basic cell biology, histology and the use of primary
- Background in tissue collection and process for molecular biology techniques
- Basic skills in protein and RNA detection and/or cell biology
Desirable:
- Experience working with transgenic mice including breeding and genotyping
Knowledge and experience:
Essential:
- Knowledge of molecular and cellular biology
Desirable:
- Keen interest in developing skills and experimental methods
- Knowledge of statistical methods in molecular biology and physiology
Personal skills/behaviours/qualities:
Essential:
- High level of motivation and drive
- Evidence of ability to organise and conduct complex research projects
- Good written and verbal communication skills in English
- Ability to work effectively with researchers from different fields (computer scientists to experimental biologists) ranging from postgraduate students to professorial level
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Ability and eagerness to learn new concepts and acquire new skills in biology quickly, and to seek novel and creative solutions to scientific problems
- Willingness to share knowledge and skills with other members of the group on a daily basis
