Job Summary

The Michael F Byrne Outreach and Schools Liaison Officer is a new role for the School of Chemical Engineering. The postholder will devise and deliver a school outreach strategy, with the stated aim of inspiring young people to study Chemical Engineering while promoting the University of Birmingham as the destination of choice. They will lead on a range of events and activities primarily within the School but also off campus. The role is responsible for building and managing relationships with schools and colleges, and identifying new opportunities. They will hold an overview of outreach activity across the School, co-ordinating and supporting colleagues’ efforts and developing and delivering a number of new outreach events. The postholder will seek to build constructive relationships with schools and teachers to lead to good pipelines for potential applicants coming onto campus and being made aware of Chemical Engineering as one of the pathways available from taking STEM A levels.

The postholder will also support marketing, recruitment and admissions activities for the School, as required, including open days and offer holder days. Weekend and evening work will be necessary, as will travel within the UK.

Main Duties

Outreach

The postholder will be responsible for devising, maintaining and helping to deliver a School Outreach Strategy.

Schools Liaison

The postholder will be responsible for identifying key schools and colleges, building and maintaining relationships and ensuring the University of Birmingham is perceived as a destination of choice for Chemical Engineering.

Events

The postholder will lead on the delivery of a number of College-wide and School of Mathematics events.

Person Specification includes

  • Degree level education plus at least five GCSEs at grades A-C, including Mathematics and English
  • An A-Level in a STEM subject
  • Experience in delivering outreach activities preferably in an education environment
  • Event management experience
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Highly developed oral and written communication skills to deal with a wide range of contacts, both internally and externally, and at all levels from school pupils to teachers
  • Excellent presentation skills and ability to handle groups of varying ages
