Position Details

Area:        School of Chemical Engineering in the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences
Salary:         Full time starting salary is normally in the range £27,511 to £30,046 with potential progression once in post to £33,797
Band/Grade:    Grade 6
Hours:        Full time

Job Summary

The Michael F Byrne Outreach and Schools Liaison Officer is a new role for the School of Chemical Engineering. The postholder will devise and deliver a school outreach strategy, with the stated aim of inspiring young people to study Chemical Engineering while promoting the University of Birmingham as the destination of choice. They will lead on a range of events and activities primarily within the School but also off campus. The role is responsible for building and managing relationships with schools and colleges, and identifying new opportunities. They will hold an overview of outreach activity across the School, co-ordinating and supporting colleagues’ efforts and developing and delivering a number of new outreach events. The postholder will seek to build constructive relationships with schools and teachers to lead to good pipelines for potential applicants coming onto campus and being made aware of Chemical Engineering as one of the pathways available from taking STEM A levels

The postholder will also support marketing, recruitment and admissions activities for the School, as required, including open days and offer holder days. Weekend and evening work will be necessary, as will travel within the UK.

Main Duties

Outreach

The postholder will be responsible for devising, maintaining and helping to deliver a School Outreach Strategy. They will:

•    Deliver activities that will position the University of Birmingham as the destination of choice to study Chemical Engineering
•    Develop an innovative programme of activities, appropriate for different age groups and evaluate their impact and review 
•    Develop innovative ways to nurture pupils through their journey from early interest to application
•    Be able to inspire and engage young people in Chemical Engineering subjects with their creativity and presentation skills
•    Target specific underrepresented groups and encourage participation in Chemical Engineering,  co-ordinating with the central WP/Outreach teams where appropriate 
•    Identify or encourage colleagues to engage in outreach across the School and work with them to co-ordinate activity and support their delivery
•    Engage academic staff across the School to secure their support for outreach activities and help them communicate their research
•    Develop a School Outreach Strategy and occasionally other reports as required.

Schools Liaison

The postholder will be responsible for identifying key schools and colleges, building and maintaining relationships and ensuring the University of Birmingham is perceived as a destination of choice for Chemical Engineering. This will include:

•    Using data and liaising with the central outreach team to prioritise target schools 
•    Developing and delivering an engagement plan for target schools
•    Building relationships with school staff and pupils in order to nurture the pipeline of maths applicants
•    Hosting events on campus and travel for visits off campus
•    Developing and maintaining relationships with external organisations
•    Identifying and adopting new techniques and resources for schools liaison
•    Managing requests from schools to visit the campus 
•    Securing support internally for activities to ensure appropriate academic participation and student representation, maintaining and developing a database of contributors
•    Producing marketing collateral in accordance with University branding guidelines, including working with Creative Media
•    Understanding and applying GDPR
•    Acting as the main contact for all schools liaison enquiries within the School. 

Events

The postholder will lead on the delivery of a number of College-wide and School of Mathematics events. This will include:

•    Work together with the Michael Byrne Outreach Fellow, The Admissions Team, and other colleagues in the School of Chemical Engineering to coordinate outreach events 
•    They will, devise appropriate talks, events and workshops that promote Chemical Engineering to a wide audience of schools, colleges and individuals
•    Work with academic colleagues, students and alumni to forge and build relationships with schools, colleges  and individual teachers
•    Build the School’s social media presence including running appropriate pages and campaigns to promote Chemical Engineering to Schools, Colleges, teachers and individuals 
•    Manage bookings for rooms and catering
•    Market events to potential participants using appropriate channels
•    Liaise with other teams across the University to ensure the timings of events are appropriate
•    Monitor attendance and evaluating the success of events using appropriate feedback and evaluation methods
•    Review events and evaluate next steps on an ongoing basis
•    Proactively propose new events and new ways of engaging with key audiences 
•    Supporting the recruitment of student ambassadors
•    Managing a team of student ambassadors with the admissions officer including workload and payment for the outreach activity 
•    Providing event management advice to colleagues.
•    Support School recruitment activities such as open days and offer holder days in both the organisation and delivery
•    Run and contribute to marketing through social media 

Other duties

•    To carry out other delegated duties as may reasonably be required by the School 
•    The postholder must be prepared to work outside of normal working hours and away from the normal place of work as required throughout the year.
•    Contribute to the Education Support Office team on occasion if needed in agreement with the ESO manager and Head of Operations

Person Specification

•    Degree level education plus at least five GCSEs at grades A-C, including Mathematics and English 
•    An A-Level in a STEM subject
•    Experience in delivering outreach activities preferably in an education environment
•    Event management experience
•    Excellent organisational skills 
•    Highly developed oral and written communication skills to deal with a wide range of contacts, both internally and externally, and at all levels from school pupils to teachers 
•    Excellent presentation skills and ability to handle groups of varying ages
•    The successful candidate will be required to complete a Disclosure and Barring Service check.
•    Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to use tact and diplomacy
•    Demonstrable commitment to customer service. A strong understanding of how to respond to differing stakeholders’ needs
•    Cultural sensitivity 
•    Confidence in dealing with senior staff 
•    Ability to work under pressure, managing competing deadlines
•    Experience of using databases to manage information, including performing mail merge 
•    IT skills, particularly Microsoft Office packages 
•    Experience of using social media in a business environment
•    A high level of initiative is required along with the capacity to work independently
•    A creative approach to problem solving and a ‘can-do’ attitude
•    A strong team player
•    Flexibility to work out of hours, evenings and weekends, when required (e.g. at Open Days)
