Want to be involved in changing the world for the better?

We are offering you the opportunity to do just that.  One example - treating bacterial infections is becoming increasingly difficult due to the growing threat of antibiotic resistance. Bacterial mutations can mean that the antimicrobial drugs once successfully prescribed to treat an infection may no longer be effective.  The Zepler Institute within the University of Southampton, has developed a lab-on-chip that can tell doctors whether the bacteria causing the infection are resistant to certain antibiotics.  The chip, which uses the thin-film transistor technology found in most television or computer displays, turns a procedure that would typically take days to carry out in a specialised laboratory, into a 10 minute test that can be administered on the spot by a GP.

By joining us you will be contributing to this pioneering work by taking responsibility for the mechanical workshop and technical support for the labs and cleanrooms in Mountbatten Building.  Your main duties will be ensuring that the mechanical workshop is comprehensively managed with your involvement in Training, Health and Safety, Production, Sourcing - all aspects of the workshop will be under your remit. Along with this you will have a major role to play in supporting the optical and laser laboratories and dealing with all the services that they may need, from installing gas lines and dealing with LEV to modifying the layout and installing new equipment. Your involvement doesn't stop there.... there is also a full and expansive cleanroom complex that needs support - from minor installations and fixes to much more comprehensive installation projects - the infrastructure team that you will play a major role in fully supports all activities in all areas of the building, there is never a dull moment.

You will be an integral part of the on-call rota after the completion of a comprehensive induction,

To be successful you will have comprehensive experience of working in and managing a mechanical workshop - with full competence for operating a multitude of machines such as manual lathe and milling machine, CNC milling machine, 3D printer. You will bring with you the ability to interpret technical requirements when not clear - then being able to produce high quality, high precision components to target specifications. Knowledge of standard plant machinery (motors, filters, pumps etc.) would be a strong advantage as would an electrical qualification (although cross skill training will be given). You will demonstrate a good level of computer literacy and ability to communicate with a wide range of stakeholders engaging the target audience.

Full training will be provided to the right candidate.
