MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology

The MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) is one of the birthplaces of modern molecular biology and has played an important role in the development of many new techniques, most notably protein crystallography, cryo-electron microscopy, DNA sequencing and monoclonal antibodies. The LMB has a clear goal of understanding biological processes at the molecular level, with the ultimate aim of using this knowledge to tackle specific problems in human health and disease. We aim to tackle difficult, long-term problems, which often require investment over many years.

There are four scientific Divisions - Structural Studies, Protein and Nucleic Acid Chemistry, Cell Biology and Neurobiology.  However, scientific collaboration between the different Divisions is extensive. Scientists are well supported by excellent scientific facilities and by the LMB Operations Group which maintains the core infrastructure and services of the institute.

Overall purpose:

You will be a member of the Estates and Facilities team at the MRC, Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) working as a Mechanical Maintenance Technician. You will be responsible for the mechanical servicing and repairs at the prestigious, state of the art LMB building, Ares and MRS.

Main duties and Key responsibilities:

This diverse role will be responsible for providing mechanical Planned & Preventive Maintenance (PPM) & Reactive Maintenance (RM) on all plant, systems and services, as well as the monitoring and fault diagnostics of computer-controlled Building Management Systems (BMS).

The operation of steam boilers and systems. Steam is used extensively throughout our sites. Training will be given if required.

You will liaise with end Users to discuss, agree and evaluate minor refurbishment works.

You will undertake various mechanical works on behalf of the Estates & Facilities Section.  This will include supervising external service providers.

You may be required to assist in the mentoring of apprentices.

The most challenging aspects of the job are to interrogate complex BMS systems and take the appropriate action to determine root cause of faults and provide appropriate response / escalation as necessary.

Working relationships:

You will report to the Services Coordinator, and will be part of the Estates and Facilities team.

You will need to interact effectively with not only staff at the LMB, but also with staff at the other LMB sites.

You will need to be able to effectively communicate with scientific users and service providers.

You will need to establish the needs of the users and communicate these both orally and through written specifications to those carrying out the work.

You will not have any line management responsibilities.

Additional information:

The workload is varied and priorities can change at short notice.

You will be required to undertake out-of-hours on call duties, this will cover approximately 6 weeks per annum.

Education / qualifications / training required:


• Completed a recognised Mechanical apprenticeship or hold the equivalent qualifications.
• Hold a valid driving licence.


• Formal Health & Safety (H&S) qualifications and ability to undertake risk assessments.
• Boiler Operation Accreditation Scheme (BOAS) certificate.

Previous work experience required:


• Good working knowledge of engineering services coupled with a good understanding of aspects of building maintenance including BMS, natural and laboratory gas systems, reverse osmosis deionised water systems, steam boilers, ground source heat pumps (GSHP), complex automated lighting systems, fire alarm & fire suppression systems, uninterruptible power supply (UPS), standby electrical generators, air compressors, chillers, heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), Air Handling units (AHU), humidification and dehumidification plant, etc.

• Experience of Steam Systems.


• Experience in a scientific environment.

• Supervision of external contractors.

Knowledge and experience:

Essential: Competent IT skills including Microsoft Office.

Desirable: Experience of estimating correct quantity of materials to complete minor works.

• Ability to work as part of a team or independently.

• Ability to plan and prioritise work without or under limited supervision.

• Ability to adapt as the workload is varied and priorities can change at short notice.

Verbal and written communication skills

Essential: Ability to effectively communicate with scientific users and service providers, establishing the needs of the users and communicate these both orally and through written specifications to those carrying out the work.

• Flexibility is required as on call cover is required and may be off site.
