Location: Oxford, ENGLAND
Deadline: 04 Jan 2022

Applications are invited for a Mechanical Engineer at the John Adams Institute for Accelerator Science.

The post is available for a fixed-term duration of 24 months.

The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is a proposed future linear electron-positron collider with a first energy stage at 380 GeV and an ultimate energy reach up to 3 TeV. The design and construction of a CLIC-type module girder and structures supporting system is a key element for demonstrating the readiness of CLIC technology systems. This includes mechanical design of a new CLIC module fulfilling the beam dynamics and alignment requirements, vibration and ground-motion analysis of the module, and follow-up of procurement and assembly of the module.

The successful candidate will take a leading role in the design and construction of a CLIC-type module girder and structures supporting system. She/he will: lead the mechanical design of a new CLIC module support system fulfilling the beam dynamics and alignment requirements; perform vibration and ground-motion analysis of the module; follow-up procurement and assembly of the module; demonstrate the alignment and vibration response performance of the module prototype together with the CERN alignment team; specify any required performance improvements; take a lead role as appropriate in the publication and presentation of results; support the work of other team members.

Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in mechanical engineering and have a proven track-record of high quality research in accelerator module design, a solid background in high-energy accelerator component mechanical design, and knowledge of CLIC and experience with CLIC module design and prototyping.

Candidates are expected to demonstrate the ability to: work as part of a team; identify research objectives and subsequently conceive, plan and independently execute appropriate activities to deadlines; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; be self-motivated and able to motivate and guide the work of others.

The post-holder will have the opportunity to teach.

Informal enquiries about this post may be made to Professor Philip Burrows ([email protected]).

Only applications received promptly by 12:00 noon UK time on 4 January 2022 can be considered. Please read the “Person Specification and Job Description” before preparing your application. You will be required to upload a Curriculum Vita, a description of relevant research experience and interests and the names and addresses of two referees as part of your online application. In addition you should arrange for the two letters of reference to be sent to [email protected] by the closing date. Applications are acknowledged but not reference letters.
