MRC Harwell Institute is an international biological research centre at the forefront of the use of mammalian models to study genetics and human diseases. Located on the Harwell Campus, just south of Oxford, it is nestled amongst a vibrant community of leading science organisations. We aim to advance medicine through cutting-edge research into the genetic basis of disease. Our research programmes span an entire lifetime, from embryonic development to diseases of ageing. £20,234 - £21,321 per annum, depending on experience (full time salary)

Overall purpose:

To maintain the unit to the required standards of ‘cleanliness’ and process, prepare and deliver equipment for housing mice on daily basis.

            

Main duties / key responsibilities:   

  • Maintain cleanliness/hygiene in laboratory areas to the prescribed standards
  • Maintain ward replenishment to satisfactory levels, including bottle filling, diet and bedding replacement
  • Operate automated and semi-automated machinery such as autoclave and tunnel washer in the cage/bottle processing area, troubleshooting problems as they arise, seeking advice where appropriate
  • Possession of, or the ability to gain (training can be provided), a Fork Lift Licence in order to unload lorries and replenish diet and bedding dispensers            

   

Working relationships:  

Member of a team working under supervision of senior personnel

 

Additional information: 

Must be able to work overtime on rota basis

Education / Qualifications / Training required:

Essential:

  • Basic literacy and numeracy

 

Previous work experience required:  

Essential:

  • Previous work experience in a busy environment

 

Desirable:

  • Worked in cleaning role with/without automated cleaning equipment

 

Knowledge and experience:

Essential:  

  • Experience of working as part of a team

 

Desirable:  

  • Experience of working to SOPs
  • Ability to operate machinery 

 

Personal skills/behaviours/qualities:

Essential: 

  • The applicant should be able to work as part of a team and work under the supervision of senior personnel
  • Good communication skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Able to lift 12.5kg bags of food and bedding
  • Flexibility in working in different areas
  • Able to work overtime to meet changing demands
