We are seeking to appoint a part-time Library Assistant to join the Bodleian Law Library’s Information Resources team to assist with the processing of new serials and the provision of front-line reader services. This is an opportunity to contribute to a key part of the team’s activity, helping to make available one of the Law Library’s main categories of information resource.
You will participate in the receiving of new serial issues: dealing with the post and other deliveries, physically processing new issues and registering them on our library management system, Alma. You will also help with shelving new issues, serial moves, and binding. Working in the reading rooms you will welcome readers and visitors, respond to routine and ad hoc enquiries (face-to-face, by telephone, and email), directing library users to appropriate services and collections, and invigilate during opening hours. You will carry out a full range of other duties associated with front-line reader services, including issuing, returning, and renewing library material and equipment, and dealing with room bookings.
You will be able to carry out routine tasks with care and accuracy, with an excellent eye for detail. You will have a good general education and IT skills, a strong customer focus, and a cooperative approach to working in a team. You will be expected to manage and prioritise your workload on a day to day basis under the guidance of the Information Resources Librarian. You will hold experience in and have an awareness of safe manual handling, preferably involving library materials.
This is a permanent, part-time post, working 29.2 hours per week. Your working days are expected to include Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. The option for flexi-time will not be available, however you will not be required to work outside of office hours.
Our staff and students come from all over the world, and we proudly promote a friendly and inclusive culture. Diversity is positively encouraged, through diverse groups and champions, as well as several family-friendly policies, such as the right to apply for flexible working and support for staff returning from periods of extended absence, for example shared parental leave.
University employees are also eligible to join the relevant pension scheme for their role. Further information on the University’s staff benefits for both work and personal life can be found here:

General queries about the recruitment and application process should be directed to the Recruitment team ([email protected]).
You will be required to upload your CV and a supporting statement/supporting evidence form as part of your online application. Your supporting statement/supporting evidence form should list each of the essential and desirable selection criteria, as listed in the job description, and explain how you meet each one.
Only applications received online before 12.00 midday on Wednesday 10 January 2024 can be considered. Interviews are expected to take place during the week commencing Monday 29 January 2024.
