The Fitzwilliam Museum library comprises 450,000 titles and 1,250 periodicals, with a focus on art history, antiquities, numismatics, conservation and sales catalogues. Part of the library is housed at the Hamilton Kerr Institute for Conservation. It is used to support staff research and is accessible to researchers, students and readers from across the University and beyond. The Museum archive comprises 30,000 historic records relating to the foundation and operation of the museum, and archives of paintings conservators.

The Library & Archive Manager manages these collections, including access for readers, ensuring the efficient administration, best practise and management of the library and archive to support mission aims around research and public engagement. They will manage the implementation of records management and retention to meet legislative and regulatory requirements and in line with the University's Information Compliance Office.

They will identify, catalogue and house new acquisitions in the framework of a collections development plan, ensuring no unnecessary duplication with other University Libraries, and the use of digital publications where appropriate. They will manage and where appropriate, catalogue the museum archive, enabling access for researchers and other stakeholders, and supporting the development of research projects based around the archive. They will support staff in identifying records of museum work for retention or disposal and advise on data protection.

Across both the Library and Archive, the postholder will explore better integration with Cambridge University Libraries which will inform the development of management plans and strategies led by the Head of Collections Management & Documentation and the Deputy Director, Collections & Research. They will ensure appropriate and sustainable storage of the collections, working closely with Conservation.

They will work closely with collections management, curatorial, conservation, health & safety and operations staff to ensure safety of collections and readers. They will ensure consistent and clear information, regulations and guidance around these areas of work, including website information relating to the library and archive.

We are seeking someone with excellent interpersonal skills, who is adept at using Library Cataloguing and Archive systems. Knowledge of key issues such as copyright, data protection (GDPR) and equality of access are of key importance as is the ability to handle archives and rare books safely.
