The Department of Psychology at Lancaster University has a vacancy for 2 full-time indefinite Lectureships, one in the area of Social Psychology and one in the area of Developmental Psychology.
Social Psychology at Lancaster. The Social Processes research group specialises in the psychology of pro-social and anti-social behaviour, moral and high-risk decision-making, and security and trust. We seek applications from candidates with interests in any area of social psychology or forensic psychology that complements these research strengths. We value methodological plurality – and are interested in colleagues who use quantitative and qualitative methods. We encourage applications from candidates with an interest in any aspect of behavioural analytics.
Developmental Psychology at Lancaster. Developmental psychologists at Lancaster specialise in broad range of topics encompassing language, communication, literacy, cognitive, and social development in both neurotypical and atypical populations. We are based across the Infancy and Early Development and the Language and Cognition research groups and take a collaborative and multifaceted approach to our work, including offline and online behavioural methods (e.g., eye tracking, reading times), neuroscientific methods (e.g., EEG/ERP, NIRS), as well as computational modelling. We encourage applications from candidates working in areas of developmental psychology that complement or extend our research strengths.
The two positions are strategic appointments to develop and enhance our research and teaching in these growth areas.
The Department of Psychology at Lancaster has a core complement of more than 40 members of academic staff and a thriving community of post-doctoral researchers and PhD students, currently based in four research groups (Infancy and Early Development, Language and Cognition, Perception and Action, Social Processes). The successful candidates will be expected to be in post by 02 January 2023 at the latest, but ideally earlier.
You must hold a PhD at the time of applying and also have a track record of research and teaching excellence demonstrated by:
- publications,
- research grant acquisition,
- engagement and socio-economic impact,
- and teaching and leadership experience, commensurate with stage of career.
The Department has revised its undergraduate teaching curriculum to embed research reproducibility and R-based teaching across the undergraduate curriculum. We actively support open science initiatives, including the development of good research practices, an active and vibrant open science group in the department with strong links to University, as well as broader open scholarship communities. For example, several staff members contributed to UK Reproducibility Network primers and resource documents, and we have embedded research integrity within our teaching curriculum and postgraduate training. The Department has a strong tradition of collaborative research across traditional boundaries within Psychology and beyond. We have a research building dedicated to behavioural and neurophysiological testing across the lifespan, supported by Psychology research technicians: one floor houses labs devoted to infant and childhood studies; the other is devoted to adult social psychology, cognition and neuroscience.
For social processes, we have an extensive array of labs and technologies to support research in social processes, security and forensic psychology. These include state-of-the-art motion tracking technology for measuring real-time nonverbal behaviour and nonverbal mimicry. We also have new video analysis lab dedicated to the analysis of large corpuses of CCTV (and other types of digital visual data). For developmental research, we have an entire floor of our research building housing child- and parent-friendly facilities and dedicated parking. Our facilities include multiple observational laboratories with cutting-edge equipment including eye-tracking technology, electroencephalography (EEG), near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRs), electromyography (EMG), heart rate detection, galvanic skin response, and infrared motion capture, as well as equipment that can be taken off site and a test library stocked with a wide range of psychometric assessments.
We support our research through personnel, as well as facilities. A dedicated technical and resources team support the implementation of our research, including on-site, off-site, and online testing. A lab manager supports recruitment and on-site testing for infant and toddler studies. We have a healthy adult participant pool through Sona. We have well-established relations with local nurseries, schools, hospitals, etc.
Lancaster University excels in both teaching and research. Lancaster University is consistently ranked among the top universities in the main UK league tables (The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2021, The Guardian University Guide 2021, and The Complete University Guide 2021). The University achieved Gold status in the most recent Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF). As a Department, we achieved the following successes in the last Research Excellence Framework (REF2021): 87% of our outputs were rated as world-leading or internationally excellent; we were ranked 17th for impact, and 29th overall. Members of the Department also participate in three major ESRC research centres. The Department promotes a symbiotic relationship between research and teaching. The success of this approach is reflected in the quality of its BPS accredited research-led teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level, including ESRC recognised PhD and Masters programmes within the largest Doctoral Training Centre in the UK.
