The Statistics and Data Science group is part of the Department of Mathematics that is part of the College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences in the University of Exeter. The group consists of three professors, two associate professors, two senior lecturers and 4 lecturers. Current research interests include uncertainty quantification in complex numerical models, spatial statistics, extremes, forecast verification, statistical modelling and OR with applications in the environment, climate, healthcare, epidemiology and engineering.

The group is active in the University’s Institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence.

The University is a partner of the Alan Turing Institute and there are a number of Alan Turing fellows in the group. The group hosts an interdisciplinary EPSRC CDT on Environmental Intelligence as well as two master’s programmes: MSc Advanced Data Science and Statistics and MSC Statistics. We also teach statistics on the 3/4 year undergraduate programme in Mathematics.

The role

We are seeking to appoint a full time post, either Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Statistics and Data Science who will contribute to extending the research profile of Statistics and Data Science at Exeter.  We have active research programmes in forecast verification, uncertainty quantification in complex numerical models, extremes, statistical modelling, spatial statistics, clinical trials and operational research, with applications in environmental science, climate, healthcare, epidemiology and engineering. We welcome applications not only from people working in these areas, but also from other areas of statistics and data science.

The post will include :-

  • Teaching on undergraduate and master’s programmes
  • Conduct an independent research programme as well as collaborating with researchers within the group, department, college and the wider university
  • Writing (and winning) research grants from UKRI and other sources
  • Be an active member of the Institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence.

About you

For a Lecturer post you will have:

  • A PhD or equivalent in Mathematics, Statistics, or Computer Science and have an independent, internationally-recognised research programme in a relevant active field of research
  • A strong record in attracting funding for research, or demonstrate potential to attract such funding
  • An active approach to inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary research
  • Enthusiasm for delivering high quality undergraduate programmes
  • Strong connections and funded projects with business and community partners
  • Involvement in projects which develop impact.

For a Senior Lecturer post you will have:

  • A PhD or equivalent in Mathematics, Statistics, or Computer Science and have an independent, internationally-recognised research programme in a relevant active field of research
  • A strong record in attracting funding for research, or demonstrate potential to attract such funding
  • An active approach to inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary research
  • Enthusiasm for delivering high quality undergraduate programmes
  • Strong connections and funded projects with business and community partners
  • Involvement in projects which develop impact
  • A strong potential for research leadership
  • A track record in refereed publications and success in significant grant capture
  • Relationships with external organisations and funders/ and knowledge and experience of key sectors or business challenges
