About the Role

The School of Business and Management (SBM) seeks to recruit an inspirational teacher and educational leader to a Lectureship in Social Entrepreneurship. This post offers an exciting opportunity to make a major contribution to the further development of the MSc in Entrepreneurship and Innovation programme, and the Entrepreneurship Hub (home for a range of extracurricular activities), the QMUL Social Venture Fund (the UK’s first student-led venture capital fund for social enterprises) and the Department of Business and Society. Experienced candidates with a strong university teaching record are encouraged to apply, both researchers and practitioners: we welcome hearing how you would best contribute to our social entrepreneurship activities. All applicants should have the ability to teach and supervise effectively across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes within the Department of Business and Society in SBM.

The School is offering this role on two career pathways: the Teaching and Scholarship (T&S) path or the Teaching and Research (T&R) path. The T&S path allows role holders to concentrate on teaching and developing the student experience. There is no requirement for research to be undertaken although pedagogy-related scholarship is encouraged. The T&R path allows role holders to balance their activities between teaching and research and role holders are expected to have a clear plan of research. Please see the summary of the roles in the next two paragraphs.

Teaching and Scholarship role

As a Lecturer you will lead and deliver modules in the areas of social and sustainable entrepreneurship, venture financing, innovation and strategy on undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, as well as providing supervision for dissertation projects within the Department of Business and Society. You will be contributing to the practitioner community and engaging with scholarly debate in the forms of blogs and teaching and learning conferences. You will be expected to take an active role in the SBM Entrepreneurship Hub. As a Senior lecturer, you will be taking a significant leadership role as Director/Co-director of the Entrepreneurship Hub, as well as supporting colleagues in teaching and setting up new programmes. You may also be expected to take the role of Programme Director of MSc Entrepreneurship and Innovation.

Teaching and Research role

As a Lecturer, you will lead and deliver modules in the areas of social and sustainable entrepreneurship, venture financing, innovation and strategy on undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, as well as providing supervision for dissertation projects within the Department of Business and Society. You should be able to demonstrate the capacity for collaborative and interdisciplinary research in your research field, as well as to publish at an internationally excellent level. As a Senior Lecturer the successful applicant will already be an established academic and will be expected to have a strong publication record with demonstrated potential to publish at the world-leading level and a proven record in mentoring and developing staff and students.

About You

You will have completed a doctorate (or have a doctorate under examination) in a relevant subject. You will be able to demonstrate a good understanding of practice as well as a commitment to cross-disciplinary learning and scholarship-based teaching. We are looking for someone with a keen interest and expertise in new methods of pedagogical engagement suited to our diverse cohorts of students. We also appreciate expertise in engaging large numbers of students and delivering successful pedagogy with large cohorts. In addition, we value experience and expertise in leading initiatives in student entrepreneurship and social entrepreneurship.

About the School of Business and Management, and the Department of Business and Society

The School of Business and Management is one of the eight schools in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The School has been undergoing a period of rapid growth, doubling our number of academic staff over the last five years. We presently have 90 academic staff. We have over 1,600 undergraduate business studies students plus approximately 800 students taking business in combination with other degree subjects within QMUL. At the post-graduate level we have approximately 800 MSc students and a well-established doctoral programme of around 80 doctoral students.

SBM’s core purpose is to promote social justice, sustainability and good governance in the management of private, public and voluntary organisations through our research and education. We are a distinctive School that takes a humanities and social science-led approach to our scholarship, and are now the largest school within QMUL’s Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, with its traditional strengths as a site of critical thinking in the humanities, law, history, geography and politics.

The Department of Business and Society brings together colleagues, committed to excellence in teaching and research, with a wide range of expertise from different disciplines. In our teaching and research we focus on how business and management influence society (for example, in economic development, through innovation in environmentally beneficial products and systems, through responsible management practices, by management in the non-profit and public sectors and in businesses in the creative and cultural industries), and how society shapes business and management (for example, through law and regulation but also through changing norms and expectations for equality and diversity and environmental sustainability).

The post is based at the Mile End Campus in London. It is a full time, permanent appointment, with an expected start date of 4th January 2022 (or earlier). The starting salary will be Grade 5/6, in the range of £42,433 - £52,833 per annum for those appointed as Lecturer, or in Grade 7, in the range of £55,840 - £62,415 per annum for those appointed as Senior Lecturer, in both cases inclusive of London Allowance.
