Job summary

The Centre for Languages, Culture and Communication at Imperial College London wishes to appoint a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer to join the Science Communication Unit (SCU) and contribute to the core teaching and administration of our two prestigious master’s programmes in Science Communication and Science Media Production, graduating about 50 students each year.

You will have an established academic record in critical science communication studies or Science and Technology Studies, as well as a good understanding of science communication practice.

SCU is noted for its strong sense of community, and for the importance it gives to staff-student relations. As a Course Leader, you will have a central role in maintaining this ethos. 


Duties and responsibilities

As Course Leader for the MSc Science Communication, the postholder will take charge of the daily running, overall administration, and general strategy of the larger of our two masters courses and will play a full part in the SCU’s activities. The precise allocation of administrative duties will be subject to the postholder’s experience.  Duties will also include some core and option teaching, coordinating a dissertation module and a term-long creative group project, and supervising and assessing some dissertations and the group project.


Essential requirements

  • An established academic profile in science communication studies.

  • Proven success in workshop-based interactive and/or active learning in an HE environment with a reflexive, constructivist approach to teaching

  • Ability to communicate exceptionally well, conveying ideas and concepts clearly and effectively in writing and verbally.

  • Commitment to the values of the Science Communication Unit: rigour, reflexivity, critical thinking, creativity and a student-centred approach.

The College is currently trialling a Work Location Framework until early 2023.  Hybrid working may be considered for this role and the role holder may be expected to work 60% or more of their time onsite, with 40% the minimum time spent onsite.  The opportunity for hybrid working will be discussed at interview.
