About the Role

Post-holders will be expected to assume responsibility for leading one or more aspects of teaching in the JEI curriculum, as well as contributing to the administration of the JEI, scholarship of teaching and learning and other Queen Mary activities, including contributing to the International Centre for Teaching and Learning, between Queen Mary and NPU.

About You

Candidates are sought at Lecturer/Senior Lecturer level with experience in materials science/materials chemistry education and teaching development, with particular relevance to teaching materials science or  polymer, organic and materials chemistry to non-chemistry students. Candidates should have experience of teaching delivery at undergraduate level and an interest in curriculum development, novel pedagogies or inclusive education. Emphasis is placed in the JEI curriculum on engineering practice and preparation for a professional engineering career. Candidates with industrial experience and professional practice are welcomed.

Candidates should be able to demonstrate teaching expertise or potential in one or more of the following fields:

  • Fundamentals of materials science
  • Fundamentals of chemistry for non-chemistry students, with special emphasis on molecular and atomic structure, thermodynamics, acid-base theory, kinetics, and fundamentals of organic chemistry relevant for material scientists
  • Basic and advanced polymer chemistry and synthesis
  • Fundamentals of chemistry underpinning materials synthesis, functionalisation and behaviour

It is expected that successful candidates will possess a PhD or equivalent, with an established track record of teaching and scholarship of teaching and learning in the relevant area. The post holder will be expected to act as subject lead with an extensive up-to-date knowledge of the field. A commitment to high quality teaching and development of new pedagogies is essential to support our thriving undergraduate and postgraduate taught programmes in China. Successful candidates will be appointed as a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer, depending on experience.

About the School

The School of Engineering and Materials Science (SEMS) has an excellent track record in research across a range of engineering disciplines, including Materials, Mechanical, Aerospace, Biomedical, Robotics and Design. In the 2014 REF, QMUL’s General Engineering was ranked 7th in the UK with research publications ranked 4th. Supporting QMUL’s commitment to internationally leading education, SEMS have established a Joint Educational Institute (JEI) with Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU) in Xi’an, China, delivering degree programmes in Materials Science in China. Applicants with experience in the area of materials science and engineering are sought for a key Teaching and Research role to contribute to this international collaboration.

The role will be based in London but it is expected that the post-holder will spend time in Xi’an to deliver their full teaching load to our JEI students in 2 week blocks during the teaching semesters. Travel, visas and accommodation for delivery of duties in China will be provided, and Queen Mary employs support staff on the ground in Xi’an

It is a full time, permanent appointment with an expected start date of August 2021 or January 2022. The starting salary will be Grade 5/6, in the range of £42,433 - £52,833 per annum for those appointed as Lecturer, or in Grade 7, in the range of £55,840 - £62,415 as Senior Lecturer, in both cases inclusive of London Allowance. A generous academic support package will also be available.
