Job description
Job summary
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is delighted to be recruiting new colleagues who wish to develop an academic career focusing on any of the following areas: (i) Geotechnical Engineering for Offshore Renewable Energy, (ii) Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering, or (iii) Geotechnics for Climate Change Resilience.
The overall mission of our Department is to solve global challenges across the natural and built environment through world leading education, research and innovation. We focus on interactions between the built environment and the natural world and recognise that civil and environmental engineering are crucial to meeting the major challenges faced by society; including climate change, economic recovery, growing population and urbanisation, conservation of natural resources, development of renewable energy sources, sustainable transport, environmental quality and infrastructure ageing and resilience. The successful candidate will join the Geotechnics Section , a dynamic geotechnical research group, with research and teaching activities that focus on both fundamental and applied aspects of soil mechanics, geotechnical engineering, and engineering geology.
We are specifically seeking colleagues who wish to develop an academic career focusing on any of the following areas:
(i) Geotechnical Engineering for Offshore Renewable Energy,
(ii) Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering, or
(iii) Geotechnics for Climate Change Resilience.
Applications are therefore welcome from candidates with experience that could include soil-structure interaction, development of quantitative ground models for predictive analyses in offshore environments, laboratory testing, field investigations or numerical modelling, or other experience relevant to any of the three application areas listed.
The post is full time and open-ended.
Duties and responsibilities
You will plan, resource, and direct an original and impacting research programme in Geotechnical Engineering with a focus on offshore renewables, geotechnical earthquake engineering, or climate change resilience.
You will have the capability to conduct research projects on your own and to develop collaborative projects, in particular with other members of the Department and College.
You will be expected to:
- Formulate an original and potentially significant programme of research and submit research proposals and funding bids to support it
- Plan, manage, and successfully implement research projects
- Supervise, train and mentor research students and staff with the highest scientific rigour
- Disseminate results through leading international journals and conferences
- Engage with industry and other agencies to identify current challenges for research
- Maintain a leading and prominent role in the research area(s)
- Establish meaningful research collaborations with colleagues within the Section, the Department, and the College
You will also contribute to the Department’s wide spectrum of Undergraduate and Postgraduate teaching through lectures, seminars, course work, tutorials, field courses, and personal supervision.
Essential requirements
You must have a PhD (or equivalent) in Geotechnical Engineering or a related field.
You will have a developing (or established at Senior Lecturer level) national reputation and expertise in a field of research relevant to Geotechnical Engineering for Offshore Renewable Energy, Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering, or Experimental Geotechnics for Climate Change Resilience.
Experience of preparing grant applications for submission is desirable at Lecturer level and a significant track record in attracting high levels of research funding is essential at Senior Lecturer Level.
You must also have an excellent record of research, evidenced by a portfolio of research publications, confirming national/ international standing (commensurate with career stage).
Experience of training Undergraduate and Postgraduate students is essential together with supervision of higher degrees (desirable at Lecturer level and essential at Senior Lecturer level).
