The above full-time permanent post is available immediately in the Department of Biosciences within the College of Life and Environmental Sciences.

The role

We are seeking to appoint a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Chemistry (Education and Scholarship) to support the delivery of our Biochemistry, Biological and Medicinal Chemistry and Natural Sciences BSc and MSci degree programmes.

The post will include the preparation and delivery of lectures and tutorials to students on a range of topics across the breadth of chemical sciences, including organic, medicinal and analytical chemistry. The post holder will also be responsible for organising, supervising and assessing undergraduate practical classes across the chemical sciences and other duties as required by the Director of Education and/or the relevant programme director.  

The successful applicant will possess sufficient breadth or depth of specialist and core knowledge in the discipline, demonstrated by a PhD or equivalent in chemical sciences to develop teaching programmes, and teach and support learning in these academic areas. They will use a range of delivery techniques to enthuse and engage students, and will work as a member of the education team to develop and implement student-focused initiatives to support student experience and success.

About you

For a Lecturer post you will:

  • Possess sufficient breadth or depth of specialist and core knowledge in the discipline, demonstrated by a PhD (or equivalent) in chemical sciences;
  • Have evidence of excellent teaching, and experience of a range of delivery techniques to enthuse and engage students;
  • Plan, develop and produce teaching and learning material within the subject area;
  • Set, mark and assess work and examinations, and provide constructive feedback to students;
  • Participate in and develop external networks, for example, to contribute to student recruitment, student placements and outreach work;
  • Be expected to work towards Fellow of the HEA status and to attend formal CPD relating to this.

For Senior Lecturer, in addition to the above, you will:

  • Have a consistent track record of excellent teaching across a variety of modules, including as module leader;
  • Provide academic leadership to those working within relevant programme areas, and act as a mentor to peers;
  • Identify opportunities for strategic development of new and/or existing modules and programmes;
  • Resolve problems affecting the quality of programme delivery and student progress within own areas of responsibility;
  • Be expected to work towards Principal Fellow of the HEA and to attend formal CPD relating to this.
