Job Purpose

The School of Education is seeking to recruit a teaching-focused part-time (0.25 FTE) Lecturer with expertise in psychology (education / development / cognition / language) to join the Department of Education and Social Justice for two years between 1st January 2022 and 31st December 2024.  

The postholder will contribute to teaching on undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, and supervising undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations, as appropriate to the disciplinary area, including distance learning environment. In addition to contributing to the department/school through management/leadership, and enterprise activities, as appropriate.

Specifically, the post will provide teaching for quantitative research methods for the BSc in Psychology in Education, and supervise dissertations for the same BSc and for the MSc in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Learning and Teaching
To use a variety of teaching methods, including distance teaching, and to advise individuals and groups of undergraduate and postgraduate students. Where appropriate to the discipline this may include:
•    To teach and examine courses at a range of levels
•    Where appropriate, to undertake and develop the full range of responsibilities in relation to supervision, marking and examining
•    To use appropriate approaches to learning and teaching in their field 
•    To develop learning and teaching tasks and methods
•    To devise & supervise projects, student dissertations and practical work 
•    To mark (formative and summative assessment).
•    To update own subject expertise in quantitative research methods and psychology.
•    To play a role in student recruitment and retention activities (e.g. online and physical open days).
•    To undertake personal professional development in teaching, including self-reflection on own teaching, using student and peer review feedback, to enhance own teaching and learning processes. 

Management/ Administration
To contribute to Departmental/School administration. This may include:
•    Contributing to Departmental/School teaching-related activities and teaching-related administration.
•    Advising on personal development of students.
•    Contributing to some teaching-related administrative activities within the University (e.g. exam boards).

Person Specification

•    Normally, a higher Degree (usually PhD) in a subject relevant to the teaching area or a closely related discipline, or equivalent qualifications.
•    Research/teaching experience and scholarship within subject specialism.
•    An excellent teaching profile, and the ability to demonstrate that this is informed by an appropriate level of scholarship.  
•    Ability to communicate effectively, including with overseas students.
•    Membership of the British Psychological Society will be preferred.
•    Experience of researching, or knowledge of, language learning/acquisition, bilingualism, psychology of language/psycholinguistics, or other language-related work will be preferred.
•    The ability to supervise both quantitative and qualitative projects will be preferred.

Teaching
•    Ability to deliver and assess teaching programmes. 
•    Ability to use a range of appropriate teaching methods and assessment strategies to promote current, high-quality learning by stimulating learners’ natural curiosity. 
•    Highly competent use of IT software, and ability to teach using Virtual Learning Environments or willingness to develop it.
•    Ability to develop learning resources for distance and blended teaching or willingness to develop it.
•    A commitment to diversity and equity in learning and teaching.

Management & Administration
•    Ability to contribute to School/Departmental management processes.
•    Ability to assess and organise resources effectively.
•    Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes.
