The University of Surrey is a global community of ideas and people, dedicated to life-changing education and research. We are ambitious and have a bold vision of what we want to achieve - shaping ourselves into one of the best universities in the world.

Currently, one of our most exciting projects is the launch of our new Medical School: an enthusiastic and creative team of medical educators are working within the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences to develop a new School of Medicine. Our innovative programme aims to produce a new type of doctor - excellent and holistic clinical leaders who can drive change, delivering integrated and technologically advanced healthcare for their patients and communities. The programme will have a particular emphasis on digital and communication health technology (a research strength at Surrey), as well as a ‘One Health’ ethos that promotes understanding of a ‘whole society’ approach to health and builds on our aims to develop truly interprofessional training.

We are looking for two Lecturers or Senior Lecturers in Medical Education to join the School at this exciting time.

The role

Successful candidates will focus on delivering high-quality teaching for year one of our medical undergraduate curriculum: this will include biomedical science, physiology and general medicine, and specialities. The first year of the course is structured in themes, based around clinical cases, which enables medical students to learn clinically relevant biomedical science, as the foundation to the subsequent year clinical rotations.

You will support students in small and large group teaching (including case-based learning), contributing to clinical and communication skills sessions, simulation-based teaching, and eventually also teaching students in other years of the course. We would also expect you to contribute to our admissions process, to standard setting, to writing knowledge tests and OSCEs, and to supporting OSCE examining.

Please note that these roles will be offered at either Lecturer B or Senior Lecturer level depending on your experience (see job profiles below for further details). The salary range for a Lecturer B starts at £45,585. The salary range for a Senior Lecturer starts at £56,021.

About you

To join our new School, you’ll need to be a forward-looking individual with a ‘can do’ attitude and the ambition to drive innovation in medical education. You’ll have full registration with the GMC, a higher professional qualification (usually a doctoral degree or equivalent), and are likely to hold a Fellowship from the Higher Education Academy or Academy of Medical Educators.

In addition to these qualifications, you’ll have experience of providing high quality teaching and will have good knowledge of medical education principles and practices (including course accreditation, quality assurance processes, and knowledge of the professional requirements of the GMC). You’ll have a significant academic publication record and evidence of scholarly contributions to conferences, professional meetings, and societies. Finally, as an excellent communicator, you’ll have the ability to use tact, diplomacy, and empathy to build effective working relationships at all levels.

What we can offer

In addition to competitive salary, we offer a vibrant and forward-thinking working environment, childcare assistance, first-class sports and leisure facilities and access to a variety of staff development opportunities to help you fulfil your potential.
