Job Description

The University of South Wales, a member of the Teaching Excellence Alliance, is appointing a Lecturer in Wildlife Ecology. Working as a member of Biological and Forensic Sciences, you will be part of the larger Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Science.

This exciting opportunity is a fixed term position for 18 months covering teaching and research responsibilities. Based at the Glyntaff campus, the successful candidate will be expected to develop and deliver learning materials in the areas of ecology and wildlife biology, with a particular focus on conservation, wildlife studies, data analysis and applied field skills; this may include delivery of residential and international field courses. The successful candidate will be expected to teach across a range of courses within the Biological and Forensic Sciences and the Chemical and Environmental Sciences subject areas; BSc International Wildlife Biology, BSc Biology, and MSc Wildlife and Conservation Management, in particular. The successful candidate will have the capacity to engage with the rapidly shifting educational contexts of students and training needs in the wildlife biology- and conservation-oriented sector.

Alongside this, the position will support the work of a Research Fellowship with Welsh Government. The successful candidate will be expected to support this Fellowship (Biodiversity Targets: Measuring the impact and success of biodiversity policy actions [in Wales]), working alongside the Research Fellow by delivering support to policymakers in understanding the implications for nature recovery programmes, and to explore ways to improve biodiversity measurements to better understand how biodiversity is responding to climate change.

The job role will be split with 60% of time dedicated to teaching and 40% in the research support role, which also includes allocated time for individual research.

In line with USW’s 2030 Strategy (https://www.southwales.ac.uk/about/our-strategy ), the successful candidate is expected to be involved in research or scholarly activity (which may be professional practice-based) to deliver evidence-based practice, and/or research-based learning within the curriculum. It is expected that the candidate would engage with activities of the USW Accelerated Development Area (ADA) of Sustainable Environment seeking to collaborate internally and externally on relevant projects.

Reporting to the Head of Biological and Forensic Sciences, this Lecturer role requires a proactive individual with relevant knowledge and expertise. The candidate will need to possess strong mentoring and pastoral care skills. In addition to student interfacing activities, the role will require engagement in various academic administration processes related to quality assurance and enhancement as well as engagement by the candidate in marketing and recruitment activities.
