Offer Description
Job Description
The Department of History seeks to appoint a Lecturer specialising in the history of Islamicate Societies between 1500-1850. We are looking to recruit a colleague with expertise in any aspect of the history of any of the diverse societies ruled by Muslim dynasties or with significant Muslim populations during the period. As well as candidates studying the major early modern Asian empires, candidates researching under-studied regions such as Islamicate Southeast Asia or East and West Africa, and who work at the intersection of Islamicate and world history are particularly encouraged.
You will conduct and publish high quality research in the subject, seek external research funding and engage in impact-generating activities. You will contribute to first-year survey modules in world history, develop a teaching portfolio in your area of specialism, and contribute to the planning, organisation and delivery of other teaching activities at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. You will assume pastoral and administrative responsibilities, and participate actively in the life and culture of the department. A strong research record, excellent teaching ability, outstanding interpersonal skills and a collaborative ethos are essential for the role.
King’s History department is an internationally-recognised centre for the study of the history of the world. Our undergraduate curriculum introduces students to world history from the early medieval period to the present; it then offers students pathways to study every continent through their second and third years. Our MA provision is similarly broad, developing students’ expertise in medieval, early modern and modern world history. We are an intellectual home for scholars of every region of the world, who use approaches which range from local micro-histories to large-scale quantitative analysis. We particularly value conversation between scholars of different periods and places, with different approaches.
We particularly welcome applications from black and minority ethnic candidates as they are under-represented in the Department of History. Applications from members of groups marginalized on any grounds enumerated under the Equality Act are particularly welcome.
This post will be offered on a full-time, indefinite contract.
This is a full time post.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct and publish high-quality research in the history of Islamicate Societies, 1500-1850
- Contribute to the teaching of early modern history at undergraduate level
- Develop and teach single- or team-taught modules at undergraduate and postgraduate level in your field
- Participate and help lead the collaborative research activities of history at King’s
- Contribute to core, team-taught teaching in the history department at undergraduate and postgraduate level
- Contribute to the administrative and pastoral provision of the department of History
The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.
