Our school wishes to recruit a fixed term Lecturer in Statistics to start 01 July 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter. The successful candidate will contribute to both teaching and research within the Statistics group: they will inspire our students through enthusiastic teaching while producing excellent research in our collaborative environment. We welcome applicants with a background in any area of Statistics. 

As Lecturer in Statistics you will: 

  • Provide high-quality teaching to undergraduate and postgraduate students in the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science;
  • Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate projects; Proposing innovative and creative projects for final year undergraduate and MSc students and to provide high-quality supervision of these projects;
  • Produce original statistical research of international quality and promote this research actively, by publishing in recognised peer-reviewed journals, presenting at international and national conferences and workshops, and giving seminars;

To succeed in this role you will have: 

  • A doctorate in Statistics or closely aligned field
  • Research strength in Statistics or a closely aligned field, evidenced by publications in highly-rated journals, conference proceedings, or conference presentations. (Career stage will be taken into account)
  • Willingness to play a role in the broader development of the subject and to promote the Statistics Group, the School and the University externally

The School of Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science has a rich research and teaching culture in Mathematics and Statistics. It has a vibrant Statistics group that holds several major grants from EPSRC and NERC. It runs active research seminar series on diverse topics in Statistics, and is regularly hosting international conferences and workshops. The School is located in the purpose-built Sibson Building, which provides modern workspaces for research, teaching and collaboration. 

The SMSAS is widely recognised for promoting equality and diversity in mathematical sciences and statistics and currently holds an Athena SWAN Silver Award. The University of Kent holds a Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) gold award, and Mathematics/Statistics at Kent is ranked the 27th in the UK by the Complete University Guide in 2020.
