Lecturer in Professional Law (Teaching &Scholarship) - Cardiff Professional Legal Studies,
School of Law and Politics – fixed term (maternity cover)

Cardiff Professional Legal Studies (CPLS) is the department within the School of Law and Politics which offers the Graduate Diploma in Law, Legal Practice Course and Bar Training Course - postgraduate routes to professional qualification for solicitors and barristers. Cardiff University is the only Russell Group University to offer all of these courses. CPLS also provides nationwide assessment of Duty Solicitors, Police Station Representatives and expert witnesses. Its courses – which are delivered by professionally qualified staff - are well established, highly regarded within the profession and command excellent levels of satisfaction from students.

The School wishes to appoint to a fixed term (up to 12 month) position, a suitably qualified lecturer able to contribute to the teaching of all of its programmes but focussed on the courses delivered by CPLS.  The ability to teach a range of non-contentious areas (Wills and Administration of Estates, Private Client, Equity and Trusts, Solicitors Accounts and Professional Conduct) is essential. The ability to deliver legal skills training (including on interviewing and Advising) is also essential. 

This position is full-time (35 hours a week), fixed term for up to 12 months to cover a period of maternity leave.

Job Description

Undertake a full teaching load, including the development, delivery, assessment and evaluation of modules/programmes on the Legal Practice Course (LPC), the LLM Legal Practice Course and the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL). The role may also include other activities undertaken by CPLS on professional development programmes for the profession, and the delivery of other activities within the School of Law and Politics, such as clinical legal education and modules on other School programmes.

Teaching
• Design and deliver teaching programmes and contribute to module development as part of a module team
• For Grade 7: Independently contribute to module and curriculum development and lead modules for aspiring solicitors and barristers and those undertaking courses leading to the LPC, BTC, their LLM variants and any successor courses.
• Inspire postgraduate and other students under the guidance of a mentor/module leader and develop skills in assessment methods and in providing constructive feedback to students
• Supervise the work of students, including the supervision of postgraduate master’s students
• Manage projects relating to own area of work and participate in the organisation of external activities such as student placements, competitions and extra-curricular activities, including marketing events
• Supply pastoral care through both acting as a personal tutor and providing support and guidance to students building and establishing trust

Scholarship
• Contribute to scholarship in the area of work through participation in conferences, seminars and other academic and professional fora to disseminate the results of individual scholarship.
• Engage in scholarly activity through journal articles and/or outputs which advance knowledge within the area of work.
• Contribute to scholarship through interdisciplinary working with individuals and teams within, and external to, the wider university community.
• Carry out work associated with examinations (setting and marking papers, providing constructive feedback to students), administration and participation in committee work.

Other
• Engage effectively with industrial, commercial and public sector organisations, professional institutions, other academic institutions etc., regionally and nationally, to raise awareness of the School’s profile, to cultivate strategically valuable alliances, and to pursue opportunities for collaboration across a range of activities. These activities are expected to contribute to the School and the enhancement of its regional and national profile
• Participate in School administration and activities to promote the School and its work to the wider University and the outside world, e.g. open days, organisation of public lectures and other events; contribution to public consultations; policy advice etc.
• To undertake personal and professional development that is appropriate to and will enhance performance in the role of Lecturer.  At Grade 6 you will be expected to work towards the Cardiff University Education Fellowship Programme and achieving status as a Fellow of the of the Higher Education Academy.
• To mentor colleagues with less experience and advise on personal development.

Qualifications and Education
1. Qualified as a solicitor, barrister or legal executive.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
2. The ability to design, deliver and continuously develop modules across the School’s teaching programmes in a range of subject areas, in particular the following modules on the LPC and GDL: Wills and Administration of Estates, Private Client, Solicitors Accounts, Professional Conduct and Regulation, and Equity and Trusts.
3. The ability to design, deliver and continuously develop legal skills modules across the School’s teaching programmes, in particular Interviewing and Advising on the LPC.
4. Demonstrate specialist knowledge and current advancements within subject area.

Pastoral, Communication and Team Working
5. Excellent communication skills (both written and oral) and the ability to present complex ideas clearly and confidently to others using a range of media.
6. The ability to provide appropriate pastoral support to students, appreciate the needs of individual students and their circumstances and to act as a personal tutor.
7. The ability to be part of a number of teams to ensure student needs and expectations are met and, for Grade 7 appointments, the ability to act as a module leader and co-ordinate with others.
