The School of Law and Politics is seeking to appoint an outstanding candidate to join our internationally-renowned Department of Politics and International Relations.

The Department of Politics and International Relations is a dynamic and growing part of the inter-disciplinary School of Law and Politics. We are an intellectually pluralist and diverse community, with internationally-recognised and established strengths in political theory; Welsh politics and devolution; British political history; and European politics. In recent years the department has invested heavily in enhancing its strength in international relations and global politics, and now has a strong research profile in areas including cold war history; cyber-security; critical international theory; gender studies; international law; and intelligence studies. Research and teaching across the department embraces a variety of intellectual and methodological approaches. Moreover, being situated in a School of Law and Politics presents opportunities to innovate across disciplinary boundaries in both teaching and research.
We are seeking to appoint an outstanding candidate (Lecturer Grade 6) in politics with the ability to teach existing modules covering comparative politics, research methods and public policy. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to teach to a high standard, and will be expected to contribute to the teaching programme of the department at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
The successful candidate will further possess a proven ability in effective and persuasive communication to a variety of academic and non-academic audiences.

This post is full time (35 hours), fixed term for 12 months and available from 1 September 2024.
Salary:  £39,347 - £44,263 per annum (Grade 6)

Job Description

Main function

Undertake a full teaching load, including the development, delivery and evaluation of modules/programmes within the undergraduate and postgraduate provision within the School.  To supervise students and to carry out administrative duties within the work area as required.  To pursue excellence in teaching and to inspire others to do the same.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Teaching
• To design and deliver teaching allocated (depending on the profile of the successful candidate), and to contribute to module development as part of a team.
• To inspire undergraduate and postgraduate students under the guidance of a mentor / module leader and develop skills in assessment methods and in providing constructive feedback to students.
• To supervise the work of students including the supervision of Undergraduate and Master’s students and the co-supervision of PGR’s.
• To act as a Personal Tutor and provide pastoral support to students

Scholarship
• Contribute to scholarship in the area of work through participation in conferences, seminars and other academic and professional forums to disseminate the results of individual scholarship.
• Contribute to scholarship through interdisciplinary working with individuals and teams within, and external to, the wider university community
• Carry out other forms of scholarship including work associated with examinations (setting and marking paper and providing constructive feedback to students) and teaching related administration,

Other
• To undergo personal and professional development that is appropriate to and which will enhance performance in the role of Lecturer.
• To participate in School administration and activities to promote the School and its work to the wider University and the outside world
• To mentor colleagues with less experience and advise on personal development
• Any other duties not included above, but consistent with the role.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
Qualifications and Education
1.   Postgraduate degree at PhD level, or awaiting viva examination having formally submitted thesis, in a related subject area or relevant industrial experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
2..    Teaching experience at undergraduate/postgraduate level
3.    Demonstrate specialist knowledge and current advancements within academic subject area
4.    The clear ability to contribute to the delivery and continued development of modules across the School’s teaching programmes

Pastoral, Communication and Team Working
5. Excellent communication skills with the ability to present complex and conceptual ideas clearly and confidently to others using high level skills and a range of media
6.   The ability to provide appropriate pastoral support to students, appreciate the needs of individual students and their circumstances and to act as a personal tutor
7.   Proven ability to demonstrate creativity, innovation and team-working within work

Desirable Criteria 

1.   Ability to communicate through the medium of Welsh
2.   A proven ability to work without close supervision
3.   A proven ability to adapt to the changing requirements of the Higher Education community.
4.   Evidence of ability to participate in and develop both internal and external networks and utilise them to enhance the teaching activities of the School.
5.   A willingness to take responsibility for academically related administration.
