The Post

Applications are invited for a Grade 7/8 lectureship (Teaching & Research) in Physical Geography in Biological and Environmental Sciences (BES).

Within BES, we provide a deep-time, science-based perspective on contemporary environmental issues through new understandings of the complex relationships between long-term environmental change, human adaptations and resilience embedded in landscapes. We seek to appoint a physical geographer with specific expertise in the area of environmental hazards, risk mitigation, geomorphology and/or environmental resilience. Rapid changes in our environment are leading to elevated levels of risk due to unsustainable exploitation of resources, increased frequency and magnitude of extreme climatic events and greater exposure to non-climatic risks such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions through development of previously marginally habitable land driven by demographic and economic pressures. This new appointment will complement existing BES staff working on water and energy security to form a nexus of staff focussing on capacity building and resilience to rapid environmental changes across the globe.

This appointment is expected to complement existing our expertise in this area, exploit newly emerging research areas and novel technical approaches, as well as to facilitate linkages between physical geography and other research interests both in BES and elsewhere in the Faculty. Areas of teaching to be delivered include environmental hazards, environmental resilience, landscape evolution and coastal geomorphology, and relevant field and laboratory skills.

The successful candidate will be expected to undertake internationally excellent research, high quality research-led teaching, appropriate administration and other activities in Biological and Environmental Sciences, integrating with activities across the Faculty of Natural Sciences.

Description of Duties

Grade 7

  • Engage in individual and collaborative research, which aligns to the strategic direction of the University, develop a programme of research and disseminate results through regular publication in high impact journals, books and conference proceedings
  • Identify appropriate sources of funding, prepare research proposals for funding bodies and manage grants awarded
  • Supervise research students as required, providing direction, support and guidance
  • Design and deliver a range of teaching and learning, supervision and assessment activities across undergraduate, postgraduate including online/digital programmes where required
  • Participate in the Faculty’s international engagement activities as required e.g delivering teaching, contributing to joint programmes and recruitment of students
  • Participate in, and develop, networks and collaborations both internally and externally to the Division/Faculty/University
  • Participate in the administrative processes of the Division/Faculty/University including committee membership, quality assurance procedures and recruitment and admission of students
  • Any other duties, commensurate with the grade of the post

Essential Criteria

  • PhD in relevant discipline or close to successful completion
  • Evidence of a developing publication record
  • Credible plans for the active pursuit of external research funding
  • Experience or knowledge to design, teach and assess modules in the subject area
  • Evidence of the ability to deliver excellent teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level

Grade 8

  • PhD in relevant discipline Knowledge, Skills & Experience
  • Established track record of high quality published research
  • A record of involvement in applications for external funding for research and/or knowledge transfer
  • Experience of supervising dissertation projects across the range of undergraduate/ postgraduate and of supervising doctoral students
  • Experience of providing high quality teaching across a range of programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level preferably including online/digital programmes
  • Experience of designing and delivering course modules
  • Evidence of successful co-ordination, support, supervision, management and/or mentoring of others


Desirable Criteria

Grade 7

  • Higher Education teaching qualification or equivalent e.g. PGCert and/or holding or working towards Associate Fellow of Higher Education Academy (HEA)
  • Evidence of success in attracting research grants/external funding and delivering on externally funded research projects
  • Experience of supervising dissertations and research projects
  • Demonstrate a broad understanding of effective approaches to teaching and learning support as key contributions to high quality student learning
  • Evidence or knowledge to support international activities

    Biological and Environmental Sciences (BES)

    Our research interests are broad, ranging from conservation and evolutionary ecology to environmental processes including carbon and nutrient cycling, aquatic and catchment sciences, landscape and forest ecology, evolutionary biology, environment and human health, energy and environmental sustainability. Research activities are led by principal investigators who seek to understand the fundamental processes driving the evolution and maintenance of the natural environment and its interactions with human populations. We develop and exploit a range of technologies from Earth observation through to molecular techniques to understand how environments function and ecosystems are impacted from local to global scales and over annual to millennial timescales. Our research and impacts are found in all continents of the world and position us as a leading institution in Environmental Protection and Biological Conservation. In REF2021 all 100% of our research was rated as having either outstanding or very considerable impact.
